This German Sewing machine came my way, in lou of a debt.

It is 1880@s ish or there abouts may be 1890's.

It was clunkly, hard to turn over and was making some odd noises.

This really does not show how much dirt was on it.

Localy sold as well. The item with the spring is a bobbin winder.
The solid crud is visable.

More dirt.

Here you can see the dirt on the "cam action and lifter being removed.
I was using a solvent to make it soft, the a scrubbing pad. In somecases a stanly blade. Then "Meths". Finaly wax and alchol to remove the last residue.


Below is a lever from the cloth mover link.
The black stain is the mess I was removing.

It was when I was getting this deep into the cleaning the machine started to start to move freely.

99% done.

Mostly done.

The work left is to allow the machine to dry and settle. There is a solvent easing its way out. Then more machine wax.

A Shuttle in place.

I may make a wooden base. We will see.


The keen eyed members will notice the crank handle is missing.


It is repaired, just I have not fitted it, as the polish was drying.

Well, yesterday - applied the "Jimi fix" to the two propshaft bearings on my Alfa 159

MOT saturday morning, discovered Friday afternoon the rear brake pads had fallen apart - two years old Pagid pads, done 16miles (car has been parked as working from home), and the backplates had rusted, pushing the friction material away - not had pads do that in 35 yrs since my first car. Whats the odd's on my local factors being able to get some . . . so a big to Airedale Autoparts - one set of rear pads in an hour at 4.30 on a Friday afternoon - one of his suppliers had pads used only on Alfa 159 and Lancia Thema on the shelf . . .

Passed MOT 7.30am Saturday, but there's a funny thump as I move off each time - sounded to be coming from a rear wheel . . . closer inspection reveals the rear bearing on the three part prop has come adrift in its rubber mounting, and the front one is on it's way.

Seems 2 yr old petrol still works well enough to go fast, and pass emissions too

Mrs DanZac had a close encounter and lucky escape with a deer earlier in the week on the way to work.

A slog round the local (and not so local) scrappies yesterday provided a bonnet, front grill and trim panel, and a radiator fan assembly, handily all in the right colour.

And a couple of hours in the drizzle this morning and it's good as new. £100 all in, got to be happy with that.

I did ask her that, I thought it would make a good Christmas dinner, but she didn't seem best pleased.

I did some fixing on the Surf today, I had a few advisories on the MOT so ...
New bottom ball joints,.
New drop links.
Check & clean the front brakes as I have a fair bit of judder when I brake.


The old ball joints were covered in grease but I couldn't see any splits in the gaters They were split by the time I got them off though! I had to modify a brand new Lazer ball joint splitter as it wasn't quite wide enough to fit over the shaft, a bit of angle grinder and file action sorted that and it was very good at popping both the ball joints and the tie rods off! Well happy with that.
The drop links were easy.
I measured the disc run out and the nearside is at about 0.03mm the offside is about 0.1mm, the limit I'd 0.07mm so new discs and pads to come. They are nowhere near worn out though!
Mmm not sure weather to go for genuine Toyota ones at £170 a set or EBC at about £125?
The brakes have never been great on this truck.
Then I helped a neighbour put up the Christmas lights.

Crack the side of the housing where the taper goes through, both sides at the same time if you are good, one side if you aren't (me) and assuming you've removed the securing nut first, the shock will release the taper, without damage to the boot (unless you hit it with the hammer) - my pickle fork and screw-type splitter have not been used on a ball joint for 30 years since I learnt that technique from someone.

That’s how I split them, shown how to do it many years ago. I have also made a hammer end to one of the chisels of my air chisel set. I welded a nut on the end, filled in the end & rounded it off, this I did thinking it would be an easy way to split joints. I’ve used it for various thing now, but never used it for a taper joint as I haven’t needed to take one apart since.

When I was in the trade a serious accurate whack or two with a well controlled heavy hammer backed by good muscles usually did it. I saw some poor hammer wielding technique and sometimes just light muscles making life difficult. I have tried a second hammer on occasions but it never really helped much. I don't think I ever saw (in 46 years) a taper that couldn't be broken with a hammer, never a welding torch or grinder, they always go pop in the end although some are a bastard! If access was awkward or there were delicate components nearby there was always a drift with grips held by a willing assistant.

I tried the hammer and twin hammer but it wouldn't budge, I didn't have much room to get a good swing though. The ball joint splitter did it in seconds without smashing up my calipers, brake discs, shields etc.
