Not very good test of just a scarf joint strength for the original application.
In the video most of the loading on that joint will be laterally as the triangulation of the rafters above will take a lot of the forces below and transfer them to the upright posts. The timber with the scarf joint is then primarily stopping the whole thing splitting apart. Also conveniently has a piece of timber connected directly across the joint.
I'm not saying that scarf joints aren't strong just that video is testing the strength of the structure not just the joint which is a minimal part of it. It is a good location for the joint mind because it minimises the forces actually seen by the joint.

It was built with two bedrooms and a small shower room originally, the room on this end was then extended by the previous owner/builder on one side. He didn't do a great job on the floor as he just packed up the 4" ceiling joists to match the 7" floor joists
I've sorted that out with 16 new 7x2 joists. It's solid as a rock now.

@Pigeon_Droppings2 your purlin looks very like mine, the bricks holding it up are a much better idea though!

My neighbour had a loft conversion done...it meant they had to cut out the cross braces. What the structural engineer designed was a flitch beam to hold the new loft floor and then vertical bracing from the rafters down to the new floor joists to transfer the loads down vertically to the floor joists (braces were also added across the top of the rafters too).
I doubt the brick on mine is doing much...bricks aren't strong vs shear forces so suspect it was maybe there to help hold the purlin in place while they got the cross braces installed.

all i can say it proves how much the london set of workers are a bunch of bodgers
its not really surprising that our northern houses have lasted much longer than 200+ years at least the northerners get it right even the scotish workers make sure the beams are placed on the main loading wall

as goes for earthquake damage uk@gaz1 it's not an add on from the 80's! It was built like this, I have the original plans from the 1950's
The angle of the beam is a common way to fit a purlin ie 90° to the rafters. Most Google searches ive done seem to be like this. Admittedly the fixing on the end isn't great but it's stayed up for 75 years!
I'm not sure about all these "bodges" you keep on about! it's a reasonably sound roof that just needs some maintenance.
That's just not going to happen! I might as well take the whole roof off and start again and as my boys bedrooms are "in the roof" I don't think they'll like camping in the garden all winter

Mines barely standing. 1976Hay Gaz there's a few older buildings down here that are still standing, there's a fairy big one by the Thames near Tower Bridge...
Subsiding like nobody's business though insurance don't want to admit to that

bad enough with that wait until fracking starts and many houses face that insurance and companies will deny all knowledge they caused it

Told my landlord. (Family friend) during the claim but he didn't listen.
All they did was patch (badly) the cracks and hope for the best.
Front of the house is built on the path. No foundation. It moves up and down with the weather.
Here's there external work. 4500 worth apparently. I saw the schedule.

Nope. You can't see Big Ben from here. Big Ben is inside the clock tower, renamed Elizabeth Tower.

It's done!
I used the Acrow to take some weight off the bracket while the resin fixings set, then let the beam down and it is sitting nicely. The beam has about 5mm space on the sides to move about in if it needs to.
I just need to cut off the studs and then hopefully forget about it.
