Bangers and cash - restoring cars

Just watching bangers and cash as there is nothing else on.Typical british shonky restoration work, the dumper with wonky alignment of the body and a really bad paint job over anything and everything and the mgb that seems to be only half restored.It will be interesting to watch the next one with the lotus as I think it may be customers of ours that restore it.

I went into the local bike shop museum again today and they have a Greeves Scottish almost identical to the one that was on Bangers and Cash last week, nice little machine.

I'd never seen a square exhaust pipe until I saw the show, he did a nice job of the restoration.

But I don't understand why they even decided to make the programme to be honest.

Have you seen most of the crap they call entertainment, these days? I don't watch normal TV anymore due to the fact you spend most of your time wondering how braindead most must be to class the programmes as entertainment. It's nothing to do with interest, knowledge etc. It's merely keeping the masses enthralled.

There's many a time I hear someone discussing a programme they watch, & I'm thinking: "How can you? I know you're smarter than that".

There's a Greeve's locally with it which belonged to a very dear friend of mine, now sadly no longer with us. The family sold it to a local chap who keeps it in good order and it's still ridden, for a while he took it to the Scottish 6-Day trials.

I saw a thing on TV yesterday , looks like Richard Hammond is having a go at the restoration thing now too , as well as Drew Prat-chard ,,, it seems to be the new Forged in Fire type thing .

Exactly why I gave up on normal TV and didn't renew my licence when we moved house 2 years ago. The sheer volume of drivel that is put on is annoying.

Yes, there’s the six day and also just before it a two day pre-65 trial

The series was on a while ago, he was pretty serious about making a go of it as he sold off some of his classic car and bike collection to fund the venture.

A very wise friend of mine, been a motor trader for 45 years including classics. He once said to me that the only way to make a small fortune in the motor trade is to start with a large fortune.

He’s not wrong. The amount of classics which have cost more to restore than they will ever be worth is astonishing. Forget the likes of those who don’t factor in their labour and overheads, the ones who do soon find out how easy it is to go broke. As I suspect Hammond will.

Started watching that but gave up before the end of the first episode. It didn't seem to be about the cars, more about the running of the business. By the time I'd given up they hadn't even got the garage up and running. As mentioned above, it does seem to have some staged and manufactured drama built in.

If you guys who have seen all the episodes think it's worth another go, I might reconsider.

I do watch Salvage Hunters Classic Cars, but Drew Pritchard is so pompous and annoying he spoils the show.

I was watching this afternoon, a barn find capri laser with 29k miles from new!

Covered in bird mess but did clean up well… back at auction they lost £13k on it!

Take a look at a couple of examples.

This one which has been painted a non original colour and not used a lot.

Both way beyond their market value. The 1st one, 15k tops, less if you wanted to paint it the original colour. The second, well I've seen better for 10K.

Even that ford Capri, which was nothing particularly special being the 1.6 Laser (all graphics and nowt useful) made 17K at auction, so to do what they did in restoring it they had to buy it for 7k and spend no more than 5k on it. But then, it is a Ford, where values have no rhyme or reason. Not long previously an unrestored 280 Brooklands went for 20. That ought to have been a clue.

As for Richard Hammond, well he is on a hiding to nothing. When a company is not solvent you have to look why that might be before chucking more money at it.
