I got a new 0.55kw single phase motor to replace the 3 phase one from my Viceroy polisher but it’s massive and probably won’t fit.

Is there a Morden motor that doesn’t have a massive fan on the back? The new one’s an IM B3 and it’s a good 80mm longer than the old one of the same power.

You will find not only do they stick out, but they have a different bolt hole on the foot, they are the old imperial B56 frame motor.
They are still available but they are usually a special order and not cheap.

If the old 3 phase motor is serviceable, I think your best bet would be a cheap VFD, it will cost less and you will also gain the variable speed.

Not using them on mains, just for my gate photocells.

First impression is they're made from more brittle and lighter weight plastic than the real thing. Shown next to a genuine 5-way. Not sure they'd pass the drop test.

I can only imagine how many thousands of the cheapies are sitting forgotten in live circuits in attics and behind panelling, quietly rotting away, ready to let the smoke out sometime.

You be careful with that. Working inside a tube/hole/port you can sometimes get the cutter running around inside it. Can make a mess of things quite easily, and sometimes even bend the shank. Air grinder is a lot easier and safer in this respect, but make sure to hold it in the spot you want it - don't let it waggle around.

I get that from time to time, and have a few bent burrs to prove it. Obviously I haven't thrown them out, just in case.

I have straightened all my bent ones - usually by eye, sometimes by tapping the cutter still in the grinder against something, if not too badly bent.

I pulled a couple of De Walt plastic cases out of a skip the other week, both had catches missing, and both missing catches were inside one of the cases and just slipped back in place. I've still to find something to put in them.

That never seems to be a problem for long, that Bisley drawer in the picture above is the one I got last month with no use in mind, it's already full.

The cutters are 3.17mm by minimum 10cm, if I remember. Although I have some steel rod I could turn then mill to that size, I have no idea what kind of steel it is. I’ve also never heat treated metal before, at 3.17mm diameter, would that be a problem heat treating?

Another question, what does STC21 mean in relevance to carbide cutter.

While you could make some, I found the chinese carbide ones pretty good, not that I have any proper machine to use them in, I used free hand and in the lathe for marking bars.

Blimey that's a find. Had a cheap knockoff one with wheels but lasted two minutes. Ideal for site work if you just need some hand tools.
