Acquired the second bit of my setup...got the smile gauge a couple weeks ago...think I'm £40 all in with the gauge and the stand. The cheap Chinese setup which was £20...it's so much nicer using well made tools.

Really happy with what I got...waited a little while and the lovely Oxford stand came up for £20...still had it's box too! Stand I think has seen very little use...looks new. Best of all the oxford stand accepted the smile gauge on the standard fixings so no need to buy anything else.

Cutters are basically a D bit ground from silver steel and pretty simple to make

The cutters are 3.17mm by minimum 10cm, if I remember. Although I have some steel rod I could turn then mill to that size, I have no idea what kind of steel it is. I’ve also never heat treated metal before, at 3.17mm diameter, would that be a problem heat treating?

Another question, what does STC21 mean in relevance to carbide cutter.

No, it would be very easy as you wouldn't need a very powerful heat source. It would need to be something harden-able though. Silver steel is easy to heat treat and cheap in sizes that small (e.g. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272093047759?var=570902844946). Just heat it up with a blowtorch until it won't stick to a magnet, then plunge it in some water. Then heat it a bit more gently from the end furthest from the cutting tip until the tip turns a straw colour and plunge it again. Or if you're doing several, skip the second step and bung the parts in the oven at 230°C for a bit.

I forgot to mention: it'll go black when you do the first heat-and-plunge. You can coat it in boric acid to stop that happening, or you can just rub it with some wet-and-dry to remove the black coating. If you don't do that, you won't be able to tell when it goes a straw colour.

Yesterday I acquired an almost brand new 8 1/4" Skillsaw I spotted in a cash generator shop. Said the odd blades were hard to find. I brought my Dad's 1960's vintage saw from overseas along with several dozen blades, and have been using his saw for the last thirty seven years since he passed away. Its still a top performer that can be relied on. The only change on later models was using a plastic handle rather than a metal one.

Its a carpenters tool, and has worm drive, but personally I have never cut metal with a Skilsaw, though I would be confident it could be done " if " necessary.

A pair of van roof bars F.O.C because they were " rusted through" . Drop of fairy likid and a wet rag and all the rust ( green surface slime) gone and bars like new. Thank God for plonkers for they know not what they do .

Bought one of these for the TW mill. Suspect it might be on the small side, depending on which bit of the label is correct.
