Nice little Record Imp vice, with a flat oval bench grip on the screw.

The jaws srews came out with out force, heat or bad words.

Cleaned and waiting paint.

The round avil on the top is a Left handed thread.

Drying in the sun.




Now just a bit of gold leaf.

A unkown make drill vice, was in good condition. Just needed a clean.

Sadly some keen MIS member thought it was "A Shed item" and was a item he could restore.
He is one of those who knows it all and will not read the "How to do." files we hqave made up.

This is how he left it, when it was not as simple as he hoped.

I took it home and did a better job.

Yes I did clean the over spray of the thread.

A nice simple job.

Just needed a clean, a wax of some flaky paint secured.

Very little use by the looks of it.

This looked good.
Looks are not everthing.

This dates from 1948, Ex WD.
But it was seized. I have service kits for this type of extinguisher. New old stock.

The refill/charge screws was crossed threraded. There was enough left to allow a tap to save it. But the plunger rod was seized.


The issues are easy to see. Caused by some one not using the correct media inside. That has rendered this a display unit only.

It does work, it is filled with Ox Blood. But thast is to preserve tthe insides.

But it did kill a hammer.

So I fixed it.

It looks like when it was made. The head was forced on and the smallest amount of resin was used to secure it.

So I used a wedge and heat to secure it.

Nice little photo trimmer. Has had a hard life and the cutting edge has started to round over.
Meaning it is tearing the photo, not shearing it in a clean action.

Set the spring tension, so the blade holds it's own weight, but will pass the fixed blade under gentle pressure.
Apply the stropping paste. That is the grey lines you can see,

Then move the blade through the whole range untill you have a set of edges that do not allow water to pass through.
Clean off well and apply a hard wax to the edge.

When the edge was done I set to work on the wood.

Easy to do.

Clean wel with "Meths" and wire wool. This removes the dirt and oils.
Then sand the wood with 1000 grit paper.. A few coats of sanding sealer and lots of French polish.

Then more wax.

Put a new crystal in my finger clock... been cracked for years. Happily ordered the right size from ebay

Fixed the wheel barrow again and set fire to the plastic bearing!
Decided to finally find out after two years why the mower keeps overheating.
Changed the coolant, flushed system, cleaned rad with airline and cleaned air filter. Still overheated!
Suspect a faulty thermostat now, removed that along with new coolant again.
Run up looking for leaks and called myself many naughty words.
Loose fan belt!

In the process of replacing a wooden lintel, it was a right mess of wood, brick and foam so thought I’d use a spare UB to really sort the situation. Found one side was lower than the other so used some 10mm bar to level it out (didn’t need to weld it but was a good excuse ) just waiting for the cement to set then will add a timber support frame above…Then got bored and took apart what I thought was a plasma monitor but must have been an LCD :

Grass cutter fixed!

In truththis has nothing to do with me, honest. My pal has a Garage in Ancoats Manchester and you need to be made of different stuff to have a place there, during lockdown eight or so balaclava wearing scallies tried to rob him of a Scrambler bike and to look at him you wouldn't look twice, guess who won that argument! Anyhow, back to the plot, he gets the most ridiculous customers, the guy actually drove this in, "Needs a clutch mate"!



New ventilation holes top and bottom and I think the flywheel is gonna be scrap, but it is staying, not a great deal of money around in Ancoates, despite this some hipsters have it listed as the 13th "coolest place in the world to live" they have obviously never actually been to the place.

Fixed both the non working welding masks , Id bought a new auto darkening unit for one of them and cleaned out the battery terminals and fitted new covers to the other one. The Amazon auto shield was crap, didnt go light just stayed dark and was a sealed unit rather than a replaceable battery one ( I do lots of welding on a project , then the mask sits un used for months so a replaceable battery is a must) if the seller couldnt be accurate with the description I dont trust that it met the standards to which it claimed. Sripped the broken unit apart to find it was a broken solder joint on the lead from the battery terminal - easy fix. so thats both Lidl masks fit for another few years of neglect.

I have had a few friends over the years who have had scrap yards and I was at first horrified to find people would actually go to the scrapyard to buy used (USED) brake pads

It naturally follows that when this guy asked if a "second hand one" could be fitted, nobody was surprised.

I got this plane for spares, well that was the cunning plan.

I knew it was "tired", but it had the spares I wanted.
But after a wash with "Meths" a name,a broard arrow and a service number came into view. A phone call to The Royal British Legion and they agreed to see if we can find out more about the owner.

So it was not robbed for spares.. But I choose to restore it.

Getting it into the componets parts was easy and no issues.

All through not the best image, the bow in the keeper plate can be made up.
Easy fix with a jig to bend it flat.

The differance is clear between the dirty and clean side.

All the parts are stamped, so I chosse not to replace the main blade wedge. Just repaired it.

This is one of two Lucas Bike lamps I aquired. Tired for their age. But from the two I could make one complete one.

This is the spare unit.
It has good springs, a working wick gear and the red side lense is complete.

The whole assembly was dismantled and cleaned and parts moved over.

New track rod ends on my beloved Rover 600.

this started with 'lets paint the mudguards'.

it transitioned to 'oh dear, some rust scabs, better clean them up'

then the inevitable 'all the metal disappeared when wire wheeled'

8 hours of welding today......

right hand side doesn’t look to bad here (id rattle canned a bit of paint on as I wasn’t going to tackle this til I painted the lorry but I’m glad I did…)

Cut out the bare minimum to get back to good metal…

Wait, whats that in there… this just became a much bigger job…

Worst of the rust cut out, loose scale removed, rust killed and primed…

Pattern transferred to the sheet metal and cut out.

Welded in

Flap wheeled half decent (more to do here)

Then on to floor… oh dear oh dear, better pull the carpet right out…

Cut out the rot (not anything like as bad as it looks) and rust killed.

Then wire wheeled back and new metal welded in.

Onto the other side, cut out and new piece lined up

And welded in. again more flap wheeling to do.

A bit further down, lets get this fixed too…

And whilst were at it lets get rid of these rivet holes…

I thought I was done cutting stuff out when I sorted the floor. However I gave the inner sill a good prod with a screwdriver and it just disappeared…..

That’s better.

That’ll do, 8 hrs is enough.
