At least he wouldn't get done for speeding! When I owned a sportster, a bike I still like for my sins, fitted with better ignition, pipes and decent cams, to make it at least respectable, I once went on a ride out with an owners club. It was miserable. They went so slowly they were a danger to traffic, the pillions were taking photos of each other and I nearly fell asleep and dropped it. The point of the ride seemed to be sitting in front of the pub drinking beer and admiring their bikes. Never again. When I rode with American friends many years ago, the traffic were the obstacles that we avoided, not the other way round!

Road trip today, to acquire a Colchester adjustable height work table. Just a couple of minor issues. The cranking mechanism is a little stiff, and needs a new extension cord for the 240v receptacle. I cleaned a couple of spots with some solvent, and the paint underneath on the base looks good, but I'll probably paint the whole thing anyway; not my favourite green though.

I grew up keeping up. Most of my mates had CB250 Hondas. I had a D14 bantam, and I wasn't often the last one to arrive and have to get the round in. Happy days!

My smart meters are as thick as mince, I still have to read the meters manually every month.

I've given up ringing and emailing to get them sorted. I've bought an Optical Utility Meter LED Pulse Sensor so I can be independent of the carp they installed.

That reminds me, I've bought a few other Raspberry Pi sensors for the kids and I to play with over Christmas. A HC-SR04 Ultrasonic Range Sensor so we can track how full the wood pellet hopper for the boiler is, and a very accurate ICP-10125 Air Pressure Sensor just for fun, I may add other weather station equipment later, I didn't want to buy an all in one unit as they are generally cheap tat. Some anemometer's have no IP rating and need "additional weather protection", where there's wind there's usually rain so they are about as much use as the police surveillance system in Downing Street

I started to refurbish the the workbench today, and after taking the access plate off of the back of the stand I discovered there wasn't a cranking mechanism, but a spring assisted setup to act as a counterweight for manually adjusting the height. Its much simpler to use and also allows the table to be rotated 360* to the left or right. The handle on the side actuates a clamp which holds the pillar in position. The height is adjustable from a low of 31" to a maximum of 45". I also noted that there was no sign of the electrical outlet ever being hooked up. Also, there are no holes in the electrical box to allow wiring to be routed either. Here are some photos from today.

Why do you have smart meters?

We only had natural gas installed recently, and it was the default. We changed electricity suppliers (what a big con) and they wanted a smart meter, and I got sick of the phone calls from the fitters contracted to meet government targets.

I like the idea, but in practise, once installed there's nobody to make them work. They said it would all come up in a couple of days and you can see your usage on the little battery driven receiver. It never did and after about 2 months I got a reply email from somebody, I forget who.

I'm not too bothered about the gas meter, but on the electricity side, it would be good to show the kids the usage, especially since they espouse green attitudes but can't seem to understand a light switch also turns things off. The LED on the meter flashes something like once per watt used, this sensor detects that then you can easily poll the counter via a one-wire interface and stick it in influxdb/grafana. I shall get the kids to do that as a project.

I'm really behind, a lot of things have come my way in the last few days.

We have the dial gauge holder whose magnets could also be used to lift the entire lathe, from Soviet production.
If I read the code correctly, the procurement number is from a particularly noble vintage ...

And here is an attempt at a size comparison.

Not quite as mighty, still big and of Swiss manufacture (which is hardly visibly pointed out).

Finally, a German product - although I always find it difficult to believe so completely with Hoffmann Group products - let's say: with German quality assurance, plus a few extensions.
