I’ve used some oil soaked paper wrapped around the shaft for the seal to slide on, once it’s in position the paper pulls out.

Plastic drink cups were often use on our fleet of mini's for the slipping of seals over on shafts ..plenty of grease on the seal & cup . various thin plastic pop bottles carefully cut in half can also be helpful in the same exercise.

A @Munkul inspired 8mm boring bar sleeve. It was interesting to get a 7mm bar to cut a tight 8mm bore. Using up some en3b as I dont imagine the grade making any difference for this.
I just found a peice of 27mm cast iron, I cant think of any better use and I need to make a few more, 8.4, 10, 12 and 13mm.

Well I finaly finished one of those projects, first spotted on here and i thought "I can improve/make one of those, for my new improved MkII Tig welding bench, the swing out seat yet to come. Error No1 Snap the tap:

Being slow in the "learned my lesson" department I then went at it and did it again, didn't think I would get away with drilling it out a second time but to my amazement I did. Not made the thumbscrews yet, but I will, eventually. Works a treat:



t is bolted to a realy hefty bit of plate welded to the bench which is drilled and tapped.
The post is a bit of EN something or other that I made into a bearing holder, I dismantled the original swing arm bit and fitted a couple ball races:

it all appears to work well and should stop me scrabbling about for "Bits of stuff"to use as a support and take some of the jerkiness out of my welding, we will see.

drilling it out a second time

I have never been able to remove a tap by drilling. I use Dormer drills and they won't touch a Dormer tap. I have even tried a carbide drill to drill a broken tap in stainless steel, still didn't work. 'Electra' (EDM) on the other hand works a treat.

You really need something rigid such as a milling machine to make the drilling successful, obviously it requires carbide though. I usually just use a carbide milling cutter rather than a drill.

That is a good quality Carbide Drill and the job is set up in the Mill.

none, absolutely none of these "tricks" or as they are now called "Life Hacks" have EVER worked for me, I use German technology: Brute force and ignorance, that always works. Going outside shortly to adjust the cabinet stand on the Conect, Angle Grinder at the ready, I would use the plasma if I thought it would work but I am not convinced so the tried and tested way for me today.

That's gorgeous and a lot classier than my effort!

Assembled a new rudder for a client, mild steel with stainless rudder shaft. Skeg got attention too.

No, they're all fed from rivers.

The Vilaine river is affected by the tide, with sea water going up to Redon, but the rest is freshwater.

Fiberglass boats generally.

Used my best (whatever I could find 316 rods), works for me.

Always done it like that.

What do you dislike ?

Made a shelf today.
Fine piece of bespoke carpentry.
Wasted in the workshop really, no one else gets to admire it.
Still, keeps the little hydrovane off the floor. Got my old pcl hose reel 're hosed too and mounted that up.

Ordered a few more connection bits as this will have a receiver, regulator and honeywell pressure switch bodged into the set up too.
Only 70psi but so quiet! Saves firing up the big compressor if I don't need to.
