Trucks verses the railway was simple. Trucks do it far better, door to door. Railways get to the centers of towns/citys, but still need local distribution, not so easy for heavy kit with loading/unloading. But, it all developed before peeps got worried about pollution. Beeching cut down the railway network because lots of the little lines were not cost effective. Same happened here.
Then there was the canal network. Sounded good (and we are now grateful for that..) but quickly taken over by the railway, then roads. Canals were quickly reduced to carrying low value goods that didn't matter about being delivered quickly, like china clay.

I stopped beating those drums many years ago Tom and don't vote any more. My guess is none at all... if its about the environment then it doesn't have any environmental impact and is actually carbon negative for the next 10 years

I doubt that either of them realised what was going to happen later.. The US natives actually helped the 'settlers' get through the first winter and introduced them to local foodstuffs like corn. It didn't go well after that..

Please give me an example of a single EV (no FF allowed) 4x4 available to buy now that can tow 3.5T. Let’s give you a generous 60K budget (more than a hilux etc) and ideally capable of a very reasonable 100 miles whilst towing.

The new ford F150 lightening which you will have to import from the states with the steering wheel on the wrong side. I'm kinda ashamed to admit I kinda like it. All its quoted ranges are whilst full loaded so should be able to tow a decent distance.

Still thing the JCB hydrogen engine is the most sensible and practical way to go. Not only from the point of view it fits the social norm but preserves jobs from the oil and gas sector etc.
