A reality check (unlikely by any guv) would just keep ICE cars out of towns and citys. Then go easy on small ice cars in the country, but cane big ones. Make sure that people going into towns can 'park and drive' at reasonable cost, so their ice cars don't need to go and pollute towns.
Elsewhere, there was a discussion similar to this thread. Bloke was saying ' I have done OK and have the money, so why can't I drive my petrol Range Rover'. I quite strongly pointed out that he was exactly the problem. Find another way to spend your money and impress people, there are plenty available.
If the guv tries to suppress small ice vehicles, who suffers? The less well off, as usual..
As far as the UK is concerned, apart from air quality in towns, its contribution to global problems is very small. Not to say it can't be reduced, but a bit of thought, rather than grabbing headlines, would work quite well.
I’m all for EV, I’m hoping my next car will be one, but…I would have said a Bollinger, about 60k in the US bit close to 100k over here. The Ranger is likely to go EV after the 2022 is launched, but not straight away. It's the same platform as the new VW Amarok so they could both go EV.
I've no idea what a Ranger EV might tow, probably no point speculating, but I would guess it would have decent range at motorway speeds. We drive the Leaf at 70 and range doesn't suddenly drop.I’m all for EV, I’m hoping my next car will be one, but…
I am in a small minority and I’d really like to be able to tow (2.2t would prob do me but ideally the full 3.5) occasionally, it would cause me great inconvenience but granted it’s not a ‘need’.
Will the ranger be able to tow that weight at motorway speeds for any distance at all?
As for the Bollinger, I could buy 2 hiluxs for 100k, it just makes no financial sense. It’s a novelty item at best, I know I won’t see any farmers in one and the only builders that might buy one would probably spend half the day in the gym and have an instagram page!
i did look at converting my 4x4 to electric as i dont do that many miles and it could be fun.... then i saw the prices and decided not too...
but i did also look at the diy kits and they are not too bad, but i do wonder if it will be fun to get the approvals for the tax free stuff.
and i agree alot of EV's are expencive... hence i have a cheep one.
There was a chap on the local radio yesterday who offers a service to converting ICE cars to electric.
Spouting all sorts of crap (in my opinion) which was all based on how much you can save because of no fuel tax and cheap electricity etc. Justifying his 20K-200K conversions costs on the basis you will save that much over the next 20-25years.
Except you would have to keep the same car for 20 years, I don't believe electric car 'enthusiasts' fall into the keeping a car for that long category.
The government (whatever party) is not going to keep giving EV owners a free ride for the next 20 years.
And his main answer to people complaining about the cost was to 'get finance like you have to for any new car' ...
It really does seem to me that you have to be pretty well off to be 'green'.
By the time we can afford to be, there will be a new band waggon to be jumped on and EVs will cost as much to run as ICE do now![]()
I’m struggling to see the problem, secondhand ICE/hybrid cars are going to be around for a good while yetI've never had a credit card. Never had a loan (exc car insurance etc)
Always bought vehicles outright.
Feel like I'm being forced Into the same rat race as the rest of the country.
New vehicles are wasted on me. I use em hard and don't worry about a ding or two. Get my money's worth and when they're uneconomical to continue running move it on
But this evangilism on route to the holy grail does 2 things.A reality check (unlikely by any guv) would just keep ICE cars out of towns and citys. Then go easy on small ice cars in the country, but cane big ones. Make sure that people going into towns can 'park and drive' at reasonable cost, so their ice cars don't need to go and pollute towns.

It's Pedantic about road tax being used for roads. You should absolutely get 100% of the road tax you pay that funds those roads back.
And I am not granted BUT most services are now destroyed. Decent shops non existent and it's our kids and grandkids who will suffer for all this extra "greentax"I’m struggling to see the problem, secondhand ICE/hybrid cars are going to be around for a good while yet
Again, I’m struggling to see what shops being non existent has to do with EV? They were gone/going years ago, before EV was even a thing - at least around here. And I am not granted BUT most services are now destroyed. EV is supposed to save the world is it not?Again, I’m struggling to see what shops being non existent has to do with EV? They were gone/going years ago, before EV was even a thing - at least around here.
It’s probably at best a stepping stone to something else, but it might save some oil in the meantime. I doubt it’ll make the shops reappear thoughEV is supposed to save the world is it not?
My sentiments entirely,ANYTHING we do is like a needle in a haystack unless China and India do the same.
Didn't think road tax went on the roads.?

Until it becomes uneconomical to run ice.I’m struggling to see the problem, secondhand ICE/hybrid cars are going to be around for a good while yet
Only if bullshite baffles brainsEV is supposed to save the world is it not?
Do tell. I'm sure that there are one or two here on the forum whose imaginations might be running riotyesterday i had to deliver an item to Hastings From didcot.
