There was a chap on the local radio yesterday who offers a service to converting ICE cars to electric.
Spouting all sorts of crap (in my opinion) which was all based on how much you can save because of no fuel tax and cheap electricity etc. Justifying his 20K-200K conversions costs on the basis you will save that much over the next 20-25years.
Except you would have to keep the same car for 20 years, I don't believe electric car 'enthusiasts' fall into the keeping a car for that long category.
The government (whatever party) is not going to keep giving EV owners a free ride for the next 20 years.
And his main answer to people complaining about the cost was to 'get finance like you have to for any new car' ...
It really does seem to me that you have to be pretty well off to be 'green'.
By the time we can afford to be, there will be a new band waggon to be jumped on and EVs will cost as much to run as ICE do now

but i did also look at the diy kits and they are not too bad, but i do wonder if it will be fun to get the approvals for the tax free stuff.
and i agree alot of EV's are expencive... hence i have a cheep one.

If your spending that much getting a car converted to electric then chances are it’s going to be some sort of classic already, or it’s a high end vehicle with a knackered engine so offsetting the cost of getting it converted would be the cost of replacing the engine anyway? I can’t imagine anyone dropping 20k on getting their run if the mill hatchback done

As you say Cruises to Antarctica. Everyone gagging to jump on a plane as soon as lockdown ended.
F1 teams flying all sorts of people and equipment all over the world, the same with most other sporting events.
It's all very well whoever creating the electric racing formula, but whilst it is in addition to F1 etc. it's just adding to the problem not saving the world.
If all worldwide sports cut just one international meeting out of their yearly schedules, How much CO2 would that save?
Lockdown proved that people can work successfully from home (in the right job) but no, everywhere is encouraging staff to get back in the office.
The only reason to get an EV at the moment is to save yourself some money and, in some cases, feel happy that you are doing 'your bit.'
Well I'm doing my bit by not having kids, pets, foreign holidays etc..
Sod the covid passports I'd like to see CO2 ration books
But the EV thing is all about pollution in towns and cities as far as I can tell, saving the planet is just a red herring when there are all sorts of high CO2 activities going on all the time.

This is all a foregone conclusion now, those who want to stay in a ICE car will be penalised, governments (pretty much all 1st world ones) will ensure it costs more to run on a fossil fuel. Petrol/Derv are only going up, tax will go up and anything brought in to tax EV will be also applied to ICE, likely at a higher rate.
You want to tow? Well the government don’t particularly want you too. It’ll have to earn its keep in future. Must say I won’t miss a few caravans but getting a mini digger might get pricey.
Crowded housing with no driveways? That’s OK, those places won’t need car owners, you’ll all be using a Uber/Zipcar type solution. Yes probably quite impractical but nobody in power cares about you ‘needing’ your own car.
For normal cars the future is set, right or wrong.

Why won't you be able to tow? Things that pull really heavy loads have been diesel electric for years. Think trains, bulldozers, cranes etc. Much more torque out of an electric motor.
Porsche cayenne hybrid can tow 3.5 ton, I'm sure there are other hybrids that can do the same.

Porsche cayenne hybrid is hardly an EV though is it, with its circa 25mile range on electric which they glibly tell you is enough for most peoples daily requirements .... pretty sure that would drop dramatically when towing

I would have said a Bollinger, about 60k in the US bit close to 100k over here. The Ranger is likely to go EV after the 2022 is launched, but not straight away. It's the same platform as the new VW Amarok so they could both go EV.

Not charged for at point of use then? The space in the carpark at Tescos and the lighting is paid for - but you take it for granted that you don't see these itemised on your bill at the checkout when you are in for a shop. Same for the "free" vend chargers provided. Ultimately all their customers pay for it.
So now I drive ICE and still pay for EV drivers fuel?

You should absolutely get 100% of the road tax you pay that funds those roads back.I want to know when and how much road tax discount I'll be getting for all the roads I can't use in and around London now...

I drive ICE as well as I need 7 seats, towing and off road capacity so I pay more than most for fuel which is why I ran the numbers and ended up with an older EV as well.
Quite a bit of marketing involved with the free chargers - a good number of EV users I come across are not stereotypical green evangelists, they tend to be well heeled company car users in a very expensive motor and plenty of disposable income to be spent in store. If you are going to be hanging around for half an hour charging then chances are you'll be spending money in their shop.
