It's no different to any other mineral oil.
You just have to degrease it properly which is normal anyway.

A lathe should be oily anyway, ignoring that before painting *anything* you should clean and degrease it I can't see using some WD40 to clean it making it any different from "normal" lathe oiliness.

Do I need a pulley for the motor the same diameter as the head stock pulley?

If you put the lathe in a gear then turn the shaft 1 turn and see how many turns the spindle does or vice versa then you can work out what the gearing, if any, should be between motor and pulley.

i was going to get one to suit the motor size as i though you had to use same Kw VFD.

On cheap chinese naff, i have a brand new chnese diesel heater here, what rubbish. fault code after fault code showing. Folk say they are the same as say an Eber but i have seen the Ebers and other better makes and the build quality is so much better. the casting alone is feeble in these things. mite be copied but thats it, not in quality is where the downfall is so chance to get a good one is wellll, a chance..

Just thinking that with a VFD i found that you can adjust the RPM, but where does it get the RPM from ?

If its from the motor then how do i know what RPM the lathe /chuck is a sit wont be the same ....will it?

It may be possible to offset the RPM reading in the VFD, basically it will get it from the Hz so if you say 1440 rpm on motor is 50hz then 25Hz will be roughly 720. If you can offset in the parameters you could get a reasonably good lathe speed readout. Problem with that however is it will only be for the gear range you have set up and personally I would still be using the mechanical gears and maybe just tweaking via the VFD if required. In that case it is unlikely the RPM readout on the VFD will be any use.

ok this is what i have.

4 turns of the headstock pulley gives one rev of the chuck.

headstock pulley is 16cm diam.

i have tried on the online calcs but cant get my head around it.

but i need to turn the headstock pulley x4 to get 1 rev of the chuck. so to get 1000rpm ( max rpm on the lathe ) it needs to be 4000rpm at the headstock pulley to get 1000rpm at the chuck..........yes ?????

I presume you were in the 1000rpm gear, if so then yes that would be 4000 pulley rpm to get the spindle to 1000rpm.
Seems a bit high if I am honest but...

my mistake, i just check3d and i put it in 1000rpm speed and now the headstock pully needs 2.25 revs to get 1 on the chuck.

so

1455rpm motor to ?????? pully 55mm ????

160mm Head stock pully at 500rpm to give 1125rpm at the spindle.

that sounds better yes ?

Ok so if 2.25 turns of pulley turns spindle 1 turn when in 1000rpm gear.
That means pulley needs to do 2250 rpm to turn spindle at 1000rpm.
So your motor is 1455 so 1455/2250= 0.646666666666
So 160mm pully multiplied by 0.6466666 = 103.466666 for motor pulley.

Ok lets see.
55mm pulley driving a 160mm pulley will mean the driver needs to turn 160/55=2.9 times to turn the driven 1 turn. So if you divide 2250rpm (that is what you want the driven to turn to give 1000 spindle rpm) by 2.9 that equals 501.7 motor rpm.

i have been going with

motor 1455rpm/100mm pully
to
headstock pully 160mm then turns 909rpm so X 2.25 spindle then 2045rpm

i am wondering fit he motor should be a lot less than the 1455rpm on have/ more like a 700rpm.

i am sure somebody said that these old lathes had lower RPM motors aswell.
