The other night the BIL had his pick up took in seconds off the drive it was so fast and looked easy, the manufacturers must rub their hands when this happens.

I think if you have keyless entry, then you should keep your key in a pan with lid on or a pukka Faraday pouch. My daughter and son in law had their Merc done, that's the advice they were given!

problem is if you make entry to anything easy on yourself, you will make it easy for a theif!
keyless entry is the worst idea ive ever seen and the quicker people stop buying into it the better!
in fact the only good thing about it is because my cars all still require a chipped key most theives leave mine alone to look for easier prey

I believe this does not work on JLR, the key fob goes to sleep if it isn't used, other makes don't (or at least didn't) have this feature

Keep my Dodge fobs in separate faraday pouches - with the fob in one, the car will not open when stood next to it, so figure its pretty good.

Do you know what year RR that was?

Thatcham, in 2019, gave JLR and a few other manufacturers one of the highest ratings for the security of their keyless entry systems, apparently earlier ones were susceptible to this kind of hack

Yep, key-less maybe as insecure as a 1960's Wilmot-Breedon 'numbered' ignition barrel, but....

The next crim. iteration, as a chap with a modified E63 found out a couple of years ago, involves an armed team busting in the front door one night and demanding the keys.
Sounds so Daily Mail, but it understandably put him off owning flash motors.

Our dog disturbed a couple of would be car thieves using the key duplicator device set up who were after both of our cars about four years ago around this time of the year .

Prevention is simple.....
Anyone with a keyless car fob needs to buy a cheap 8 " x 6 " or so all steel key press safe of eBay . Cut out the guts and screw or bolt it with several 1/4 dia bolts or screws to something that's out of sight & solid ..... site it to give easy access so it opens easily & attach an earthing cable from the box to a good earthing point ..... cleaning the junctions the thoroughly . It's called a " Grounded Faradays cage " and it stops signals getting in or out the box , put your keys in here at all times unless driving . It has been know for keyless thefts to take place whilst the owners are at home in broad daylight simply by someone getting close enough to kick start the signals with unprotected keys ..it's not just a night time crime.

Buy a couple of the Faradays key purses for when you are out and about or in a hotel etc . to also prevent theft of your car .
Also remember to protect any spare keys you may have , don't leave them in the keypress when you are not home, pop them in a Faradays purse & take them with you and keep them in a Faradays purse away from the car incase someone breaks in & finds them if you are leaving any car truck et at home or whilst your out .

I've removed the actual key press lock and replaced it with a washered knob . We both have faraday purses and two more for the spare keys to our cars .

This style of steering wheel locking bar by " Sold Secure " ( not Halfords ) is fairly good for if it's popped on the steering wheel correctly with a D shackle either side of the spokes the only way it will come off is if the steering wheel is removed or the steering wheel is cut in two places .

Had a trick Astra years ago with a steering wheel rod as above....
they ripped at it so hard they sheard the steering shaft.....
so they just nicked the wheels instead.....
there's no proper punishment....

I've heard about these sorts of methods for a few years. I've never understood the need for keyless ignition. What's so difficult about having to press a button to unlock your car/bike? When I got my car (which was originally a company car, but I got to choose which car), keyless ignition was a (pricey) optional extra. At the time I thought I'd probably pay to NOT have keyless ignition. I quite like being able to check the car is locked after I've pressed the button - how do you do that with keyless ignition? Leave your keys on the ground 100 metres away and walk back?!

I love keyless ignition on my jag XF. Keys never leave my pocket. Walk up to car, pull door handle, everything unlocks, jump in, press button and go. Locking, you press a button on the handle when you close the door. Indicators flash and mirrors fold so it's easy to see when its locked. It's the slickest and smartest keyless system I've ever used.

It's also a sub £10k motor so not something that thieves are interested in... touch wood!

Happens in a little sleepy town in West Yorks too . . . I've mentioned it before. The mum woke up due to dog barking - went downstairs to find two blokes in the hall . . . her screams woke the son . . . who chased them out the door . . . they bust the windows of the car they were trying to nick . . .

But that used to happen before defeated keyless - the bloke who came to inspect my car for registration after SVA over 20 yrs ago had an Alfa but in conversation he mentioned he was getting an impreza . . . a few years later in 2001 he inspected my next kit car . . . asked where the subaru was . . . he'd had it a while, loads were getting nicked by break-ins taking the keys. he realised taking the keys to bed with him was a bigger risk to his family, so sold it.
