Keyless entry vehicle theft

This style of steering wheel locking bar by " Sold Secure " ( not Halfords ) is fairly good for if it's popped on the steering wheel correctly with a D shackle either side of the spokes the only way it will come off is if the steering wheel is removed or the steering wheel is cut in two places .

I had one similar some years ago for one car. Autolocked, needed a key to get it open - I took it with me in a new car . . . locked it . . . when I came to leave, remembered were the key was - on the other key ring 15miles away . . .one application of hacksaw later through a weld on the claw bit and it was off . . . welded it back on later.

Got a Stop lock on mine as a visible deterent - fingers crossed . . .

A fuel cut off fuel relay & hidden switch on a 70 second timer could be useful .. steals car & it stops 80 seconds later away from the site it was stolen from ......no fuel ?

So much for modern technology being more secure - it looks like we're back to the old days where your Ford ignition key would fit practically any other model.

its the biggest con going with any vehicle going companys arnt interested in sorting it out to make it harder

but your insurance suffers and so does your premiums/quotes

it also gives areas bad names or better known as postcode lottery if your vehicle will get pinched

i wonder what would happen if people got together as one and claimed against the company they got the vehicle from and claimed against them

I love keyless ignition on my jag XF. Keys never leave my pocket. Walk up to car, pull door handle, everything unlocks, jump in, press button and go. Locking, you press a button on the handle when you close the door. Indicators flash and mirrors fold so it's easy to see when its locked. It's the slickest and smartest keyless system I've ever used.

It's also a sub £10k motor so not something that thieves are interested in... touch wood!

Suzuki use a similar system.

Google is your friend . . Stoplock - big yellow arm to lock across the steering wheel. Very visual suggestion to move on, although I have my doubts as to its utimate resistance to being removed.

I have been known to pull the pump fuse . . .

My ultimate was to pull the engine . .. and then to make sure, dismantled the engine into all its component parts. However, putting a 5.7 V8 hemi back together from a bare block didn't take that long . .so I suppose if they broke in at night, they could have driven out in the morning

Suzuki use a similar system.

My Suzuki is keyless entry/start so I have a Disklock that fits over the steering wheel, I've yet to see a relay box that can unlock that!

Used to have a big disklock type thing that went over the steering wheel years ago when I had an old polo (not sure why I thought anyone would ever want to nick it) it was a pain to fit and to have rattling around in the car. Can't believe that people are having to resort to these types of security measures again, backwards step somewhat.

I had a Renault scenic company car that had keyless entry - I came to it a few times where it had been unlocked overnight as it didn’t lock itself as it was supposed to when I walked away. I was more concerned about the tools I had in the boot than the car

How has this allowed to become an issue?!

With the tech available, it should be so easy to put in place out of hours alarms, and alerts if it's driven without the main drivers phones on board and, ultimately really good tracking.

It should be the case that stealing a modern car is so likely to get you caught that it's not worth doing. Or is it just that these tech are available but easily bypassed/hacked?

I thinks it always been the way that manufacturers are only ever one step ahead of the crims - as soon as they fetch something new out they will find a way to exploit any weaknesses or reverse engineer it to defeat it.

Keyless doesn’t seem to be the answer though, it seems a step backwards to me.

Maybe so, I was just pointing out that it doesn’t seem to matter what the manufacturer introduces there is always some way of defeating it, if they want it enough.

You didn’t need much more than a screwdriver to get away with most cars not that long ago.

that’s the one. There was a recall to get a deflector plate put in.

The wing mirror loom wires on other models was also an ‘in’. There was a spate in Essex of cheeky chappies taking the plastic off and fitting a Reed switch overnight then emptying the van. Magnet in the right place popped the locks when the insurance bought new tools.

When I worked for the feds we got loads of these on briefings. Most are / were classified for intel. I remember one officer got a disciplinary because his advice to a victim was to put the windows out on a van after it had been emptied with keyless entry. No sign of break in means insurance won’t pay out. He was trying to be helpful but the victim got the wrong end of the stick and reported him!

Ex BIL had a Renault with keyless entry, took it back to the dealer to complain that whenever he came back to the vehicle it was always unlocked, hadn't realised it was keyless entry
