Boxford drive belt issues

Update on my belt drive issues.

As previously mentioned, I purchased a new length of belt for the lathe over 5 weeks ago.

Today I finally managed to find time to fit it. I initially made it the same length as the old one. Ended up removing 5 links on the new one to start with. Ran the lathe and cracked on with a job I'd been planning on doing a while back - 35mm ID hole in 60mm OD round 120mm long. After boring the hole out I then managed to remove another 3 links in the belt and it's nice and tight now.

Further update to this issue. I ended up having to remove another link in the belt today. The belt obviously stretches over time so it's something to keep an eye on if you run a Boxford underdrive lathe.

are these belts worth the agro it has come time to change the original belt on my Boxford AUD also

no ,they are murder to do, best just flog me it for £500 as is and get yourself that harrison you really want...

I think I'd be making the motor adjustable and using a double v pulley or poly v belt. That sounds like an absolute dogs **** having to keep shortening the belts.

I've no idea why you have to keep doing it. I fitted a Nu-T-Link belt in 2013 and adjusted it as per the manufacturer's instructions. No slipping problems yet.

Those instructions state belt has to go in direction of travel, what happens when you reverse the motor?

I'm assuming that the belt referred to is the spindle drive belt. The adjustment only caters for the countershaft to intermediate.

Yes, strange isn't it? They do drive in both directions. Fit it in the way that it will be used for most of its life, i.e. in normal forward motion.

oh yes silly me that is correct the motor adjustment only tensions the small belt from motor to gear shaft

as long as it does drive in both directions I had images of the links pulling loose of something

On my old MK3 I used to shim the pillow blocks down on the countershaft as required. Also moving the blocks back /forward will also tension the belt, but watch the belt doesn't hit where it passes through the headstock casing / bed.
Then tension the motor belt after doing this.

The motor belt is at max tension really

When I had my Boxford it was originally fitted with a normal vee-belt, but it was cut so the bed could be separated from the stand. I fitted a new nut-link belt and it was terrible - noisy and nowhere near as flexible as a proper vee belt. I took the spindle out and fitted a proper vee belt. Time well spent.
