My money would be on a bypass then. Simple way to test, pump to full extension and then keep pumping. If you get a squirt of oil each time it is a bypass, if not it is probably just a little leak past the ram seal when not loaded. The port is vented to the tank so it is probably there for that reason.

Similar to a forklift too, you probably damaged the seal, say there was rust in the bottom of the cylinder, from not having a coating of oil and being open to condensation, particularly if there was no leak off return pipe. There could be a bypass in the piston also.
If it was bothering me I would have to strip the ram and find the cause and put it right.

I would not expect it to if it was not leaking under load too. I would also say that I have not come across a press with an endstroke valve/bypass as the units I had worked on usually just had a finite amount of fluid in the tank to use. BUT there could be one in a design I am not aware of.
I would think if there was a bypass valve leaking then it would continue to leak under pressure. I think perhaps as been suggested it could be the seals which may be expanding under pressure and sealing but are not sealing well enough with no load.
(Great job getting this back up and running though Brad93, glad the pump was an easy fix, they are pretty simple when you take one apart. I thought you had nothing to lose taking it apart with the prices they charge for service or replacement)

It shouldn't in a bottle jack the bypass is simply a relief hole drilled into the side of the cylinder that the ram seal is pushed past allowing the oil back into the reservoir. See red circle
Thanks, it was the bottle jack set up I had in my head to be honest but it's the "right way up" I suppose.

Thats how the ram is designed, replace the leak off tube and forget about it...
So was there a fault Brad or is it ok now?

I haven't had the ram apart yet. It's working and that will do for now. I chucked the return hose on.
Yes that’s what I meant. At least it’s up and running and you won’t have oil everywhere!
