Today I acquired...........

A bit of proper old school English engineering. A 10cc glow engine made by Meteor Engineering in Birmingham some time in the 70's. There is very little information about Meteor engines but from what I have been able to gather it was a bit of a shed industry, sand or die cast aluminum and manually machined parts. Interesting to see it is a marinized version - does it run?

Its a lot cheaper to buy another and bin it than a new spindle. It doesnt look good but its more a question if short tapers can damage the bore by raising a burr where they end. Or not a problem?

It doesnt help that this was not ground concentric to the blank so part of the end was sharp corner and needed deburring.

I did wonder if it was on the p*ss or camera angle. If it's wrong send it back. How long is the taper part of your spindle? Most I have seen are not for the full length as per the drill arbor.

Just googled Sanou and it is identical down to the packaging. They appear to get an ok reputation: https://www.model-engineer.co.uk/forums/postings.asp?th=171997&p=1

I like Sanou stuff, I have a Sanou 1-16mm pillar drill keyless chuck that came from the cheapest nastiest pillar drill from years back, in the end I think it was given away, but I still have the chuck! And it works just fine it's even outlasted a couple of morse taper arbors, from me abusing things!

I'd love a copy of that Black book but at 25-odd quid each for the metric and inch editions plus shipping plus charges I haven't yet convinced myself that the need is as great as the want.

Had a look in my Swisstech pocket reference, Din228-1A taper, should be 80mm long from 23.82mm and on this its under 50mm.

I'll phone them tomorrow.

The Swisstech pocket book is quite good, I think. For a pound each I have a few open on different pages, hanging on the wall with a magnet each. It beats my 1982 "Metric edition" Zeus, which is mostly in silly fractions.

It is an odd one.
It looks like it is the version from 1972.
But the whistle insert is a repair. Who did it has dismantled the boiler and fitted the insert from the inside.
As it would of been from the factory.

The super heater pipes are routed as they would of been from a version from 1960. As is the box.

The base plate sticker is a 1970's version, but the Mamod sticker on the boiler frame is from the 1960's

So it is either a very good repair, or a old engine re vamped by Mamod to sell in the 1970's

But it needs a lot of TLC.

New seals, a few solder joints need to be sealed.

There are a few web sites I use and from that you can gather information on the models.

They can also be used to put MT2 tooling in a MT3 mill spindle. The open back end allows for the drawbar. Same for things like dividing heads.

They are also a bugger to get out when they get stuck, Arc do one with a nut to extract itself.

I could say quite a bit about this but sticking to the Oxford Dictionary version a weapon is something designed to harm or kill, so that would be a sword then as it has no other use (you could be pedantic and include Pike but not seen many of those about). Everything else is a tool.

DO NOT get a copy of Machinery Handbook. You look something up, find something interesting and before you know it an hour has gone!

Unfortunately, your logic is incorrect in both the above statements.

There is no correlation between length and propensity to raise a burr.

Whatever the length, it is the sharpness of the edge that creates a problem. A properly chamfered and rounded end will do no damage.

In your second quote you show pictures of two completely different items to that which is irking you. It is a Morse taper open-ended sleeve. It is not a shank; it is not a tanged sleeve with drift slot.

If you want to complain of it, you need to find a standard that describes the actual thing you have (and I suspect one does not exist). Truncated Morse tapers are used all the time since forever in headstock bushes of lathes.

Get a slightly older copy and they're not too expensive - e.g. there's a 25th edition on ebay for £38 at the moment. Machinery doesn't change that much that a 5 or even 20 year old edition isn't useful. Or get the Machinery & Metal Trades Handbook, which has most (but not all) of the metric stuff in the Machinery's Handbook without all the american nonsense.
