Help offered cheap lathe but....

Ok so my friend bought this about 3 years ago and its sat in his shed since then and hes now said i can have it for £100 id never seen it so I said sounds great can I have a look... Well its not in the best shape and missing some of the gears to the screw/powerfeed gearbox plus one missing teeth. Never heard of the make has anyone else heard of these ?

It all looks there, apart from damaged/missing change wheels (unless there's more to it than that). For £100 I'd be interested in it for interest's sake, would be cool to clean it all up and see what it can do.
Edit: getting a changewheel made might cost as much as the lathe itself, but if it all runs OK after that then it's worth a lot more than £200

just makes me wonder why the gear is chipped and the others missing, Its not something I could make any money on as hes a good friend and I would need to keep it. What about rust on bed ways is that an issue ?

Someone maybe crashed it hard at some point. Or maybe a flaw in one gear took out another.

As you can see, it is made in Hungary in 1978. It will be metric. Spindle nose looks like an A-taper (a bit like D1-3, D1-4, etc. but using nuts instead of cams).

The Norton name is likely that given to it by its importer rather than its manufacturer.

The ex-iron curtain lathes were very good. It is likely to be heavy as they were never shy of building them sturdy.

As it is most likely metric, gears would be easy to find, buy or cut (i.e they are unlikely to be DP spec. and 14 1/2 degree pressure angle).

It is well worth it for the money. I think those above who are basing its value on the accessories with it are slightly misguided as these accessories will only likely fit the same model of lathe and there cannot be many of them in this country.

The change-wheel will probably be a standard metric gear, don't put him off!

Looks like it has a gearbox so it might not need to have many gears on the end.

The rust isn't a huge issue if you just want to make it work get a scraper or stanley blade and scrape off the worst then get some scotchbrite and wd40 or other penetrating oil and rub them clean. Wipe off with paper towels and make usre you clean the ways before you wind the carriage over the rust.

For other lathes (eg Harrisons or Colchesters) there are people who make nylon gears for not unreasonable amounts. It works fine for them and you could ask if they'll do you some... Or you may find they're identical to another make anyway.

Alternatively, you could go ELS.

Buy the damn thing if you need a gear that's 120mm diameter or less I'll make it for you.
