The other one I have done is weld some aluminim and think, why the heck is that rod not running in to the pool nicely. Then it dawns, some idiot is trying to push a stainless rod into the aluminium pool

This one was a bit of a fiddly one. All 1/2" s40 pipe, the drilled blank they pass through being an 8". All socket welds and fillets thankfully lol

Did you use gap washers on the socket welds? Never seen them for a good while. Think we used to settle for a 2mm gap from the end of the pipe.

we always used to bottom the fitting mark it then pull the pipe out 2mm ,sent a plumber round every store and rig in a big yard for a box of thermal gaps

qa would x ray at random to check a gap was used if not chop it

Thats odd as the Americans are obsessive about de burring and reaming the ends of pipe "because cavitation"...then its fitted with a 2mm (5/64" ) gap ?

its to obviate residual stress in the weld caused by shrinkage
