Did you use gap washers on the socket welds? Never seen them for a good while. Think we used to settle for a 2mm gap from the end of the pipe.

No, couldnt use the burn out rings due to any remnants interfering with whatever goes through the pipe?? Just set them up 2mm from the end

Not stupid at all. Positioner aka turntable is a rotating plate (often with a chuck on it) attached to a motor that is used for welding of round parts. Next best thing to having a robot welding your parts. Prop your hand, turn it on and feed the wire. Depending on the size of your work some of these positioners are huge and weigh tons and some are the size of a toaster. The rotating plate usually tilts as well, allowing for horizontal mount of longer parts (like pipe etc). Typically looks like this:

Foot pedal for turntable is just an on/off switch. Doesn’t adjust the speed. You set the speed on the speed controller

Some procedure testing from a few months back. The butt was Tig root/hot pass with elga P48S a hot running (115-150amps if I remember right?) deep penetrating 7018.
Used 3.2 for the first few passes then 4mm then back to 3.2s for the cap. Over 250 rods in total, around 12-14 hours worth lol. And a 3 run fillet as a supplement test.

This stainless one was full tig, 1.6mm rods for root, then 2.4mm all the way out. Interpass temperature of only 150°c so forever waiting for it to cool down once got a few runs in. That one also took hours, 16hrs in total.
