Yea the rules would need checking....I don't need it for commuting. I have been seeing a lot more classic cars around London lately.

Shame, they cost naff all to run and are a hoot to drive
The skoda fabia estate is supposed to be very good, and you could definitely fit a mtb in the back. I think they're quite rare though, I know my friend spent a long time trying to find his one.

I did think about a focus st estate the mk1 but there was only 300 made

I looked at classic volvo estates....prices are definitely on the up it seems.
The XC70 I have is juicy and pricey to run ....but it's only really my allotment car so doesn't get much use. A classic van/estate would have been a better choice I think.
Electric only really makes sense if you can put it through your company and benefit from the low BIK taxes and the 100% capital cost offset....but not everyone has that option.

Nice, don't suppose this bike is your daily ride as such? How reliable would it be do you think, would you risk using it?
If it's been restored/looked after and worn out parts have been replaced as and when, I'm thinking that you have as much chance with that as you do with any modern vehicle really? What do you all think??

Yea I was looking at early volvos but prices have been rocketing up the last couple of years....the XC70 is 2003 but I got it cheap from a guy in London who decided to sell because of the ULEZ...it's petrol....and compliant so was a bit confusing but I chose not to look the gift horse in the mouth so to speak.
The bloke did ring me 2 weeks later...he bought a BMW diesel and then realised that he'd be paying the £12.50 with the newer car and should just have kept his Volvo!
Its the same with old tdi discoveries (was looking for another vehicle i can run on 100% veg oil whilst the 110 is being rebuilt) - the early ones are fetching very good money now. I cant beleive how much the prices of bog standard common mid - late 80's cars are shooting up at the moment. All models seem to go through a period where they eventually become good for bangers and then the scrap heap and what remains after that period seems to creep up in price
Have a look for ssangyong musso or korando they can run on 100% veg oil. If fact they are the best motors for veg oil

Not a daily ride for sure. It’s got 2000 miles on the clock from new. It had been in a damp garage for over thirty years, silencer had rotted through, carbs were absolutely solid, took several days even with the proper solution in the ultrasonic cleaner to free them off. All new jets, float needles and seats . Front brake cylinders were both seized and had to be stripped and sorted. Tank cleaned out, new silencer from Dave Silver, new front mudguard,genuine, rear mudguard pattern, new rear light again genuine. Tyres, battery and a good service and it is lovely to ride. Takes me back to when I bought a new one in 1975.
Fancy that, I don't get how/why anyone would let a vehicle sit like that after such low mileage.
Good to hear that you saved it, keep it's wheels turning.

Its jap...on a quiet winter evening if you listen carefully you can hear them rusting
.I do like the mx5...mate had one and I got to drive it home to do some work on it. Needed a new rack (according to the MOT garage)....turned out to be just the steering outer joint (tut tut). I think that one had been welded along the chassis rails....they are so low that the rails get scraped on speed bumps/humps and it takes the paint protection off.

We have three diesels and there are only two of us

Years ago when the Tony Blair was falsely promoting diesels as the best thing sice sliced bread, I decided for myself he was wrong, and have argued this since. On principle I have never had a diesel car, nor will I. Quite obviously, they are polluters, and can only function with soot scrubbers, which are not suitable for short, low load trips - hence they clog and fail.
As far as petrol engines are concerned, Maggie thatcher threw us in with the US, and later EU regs of using catalytic converters, which need a certain amount of rich running to function - thereby making them less economical. This despite the lean burn technology and data available at the time. On balance though, I still prefer to own, drive and maintain a petrol car, and when I can afford a hybrid, will likely enjoy that as well.
Diesel engines belong in tractors, lorries and trains.
Edit to add - furthermore, I firmly believe that the effortless, low rpm torque that the turbodiesel gives is responsible for untold accidents on rural roads - I regularly have to dodge young ladies mostly, going UP hills around here faster than I'm going down them. This on roads quite simply not designed for it - 200bhp people carrier sir? Sure, give it to the wife for the school run....
