So I am redecorating a kitchen, fixing some cracked plaster, ceiling, walls, woodwork. The client (a neighbour) went for Magnolia after we tried a number of testers from Leyland SDM, a local shop within minutes from my front door.
"I'd like a couple of litres of Dulux Trade Vinyl Silk in Magnolia please".
"I'll have to check, we might be out of stock", then, "We are out of stock..."
"err, out of stock of Magnolia? I was in here just the other day and had a tested mixed up"
"No you couldn't have, we're out of stock of the base".
"Yeah, well I did, can you double check?"
He comes back "We have it in eggshell"
"Yeah Ok that will be fine".
"It's £54 for 2.5 litres"
"Wait what!! Seems a bit toppy. Doesn't sound reasonable at all. That's a very high price isn't it?"
Anyhow, I'm stuck I hadn't considered the idea a good size DIY shop would run out of Magnolia so I give him the go ahead. Then as I wander about I see a tin of, you guessed it "Dulux Trade Vinyl Silk Magnolia" sitting on the shelf. £39.99 for 5 litres.
"Ok stop! You've got some on the shelf!"
Then I hear him telling the other staff "He wanted high brightness <blah>" which is not true. I keep my calm but make it quite clear that it is not true "He can hear you mate and he did not" and that I had specifically asked for DTVS(M).
One of the chaps I often deal with (I use this shop a LOT) looks a bit sheepish but dare not speak out, the other staff are dismissive and rude. Then when I go to pay "is that all?" the manager who is at the till states dismissively.
Not exactly the sort of customer service I am looking for. I appreciate a high street retail outlet is going to be a bit toppy on price but they then try to maximise it as if they are determined to drive me to Wickes. Well it worked, I don't think I'll be using them again.
