Which grade scotchbrite for keying metal?

Hi all,

I am getting ready to put some epoxy primer on the bottom of my herald tub in the next week or so but am wondering how I am going to key the metal ready for the primer. I can’t DA it as there are loads of ribs and boxes so I was thinking of scotchbrite.

If this is an accepted method, what grade do I need? I have loads of red labelled as fine but do I need something a bit coarser?

use coarse aluminium oxide sanding roll scotchbrite is 2 fine

agree scotch isnt really man enough , use 180 paper everywhere you can

To answer your question, tan is about 120 but better with paper if you can.

yep I have some red -brown and is course and green a bit finer

Most companies offer at least course/medium/fine.
3m do 10 or more...
Don't count on the colours matching the grades accross brands.

Oh yes. I use the brown coloured ones usually.

I have some very course Scotchbrite it's Green but much more aggressive than the usual green.

Theres a light green then a dark green for heavy work, maroon has always been the one for keying a ready painted car as far as i know

If you get it from a bodyshop/automotive paint suppliers then they do tend to be consistent with the colours vs grades.
Anywhere else is a bit of a lottery.

Was in the automotive paint supplier this week to pick up some scotchbrite, on the shelf it said singles 75p packs of 10 £7.95 When I questioned it they quickly removed the 75p label. I wish now I picked up the 10 pack and opened it and said I'll take these 10 single please

I already thought they were a bit pricey as the last time I bought them they came in boxes of 20 for not much more but I needed some quickly.

I bought a load from autojumble trader and was a good price went to get some more and he had none everyone else was twice the price apparently he bought 2 container loads for peanuts from a firm jacking in if he bought the lot and now all gone

Just checked and I can get a box of 20 Indasa for £11.50 plus £1.50 postage on ebay. That's the brand the other local paint supplier stocks and I've always found them to be pretty good.

I always try and support a local supplier when possible but not when I can have them delivered to my door for half the price.

What about Mirka abralon on a soft interface pad on the DA? That should get get into a lot of the lumps and bumps and you can always use it by hand too.

Goes down to 180grit I think?

I can tell you if you list "pack of scotchbrite" on a customs import list for machine components going to the USA and a very large military aircraft company, the whole damn lot will stop until you provide an explanation of what it is!

You really do need to get the shine off that.

The perfect tool for doing that is a sandblaster, but failing that a very good second place would be a surface preparation tool.
By coincidence, I modified a cheap burnishing tool to make one last week.
The real thing is expensive but works very well.

I'm assuming you don't have acces to either so, do as much as you can with whatever DA sander you have then a two inch DA sander (the air ones are cheap and pretty good) will get the most of it and finish the bits you can't by hand with 120 production paper or something like my current go to abrasive - Mirka Aberanet.
Do not use a rotary tool as it will polish it more, unless you get a surface preparation tool which won’t.
