Finding a complete one might be hard. Its the little bits and pieces that get lost/sold that are obsolete, or hard/expensive to source is a big problem. At least with a ‘running’ bike I know its all there. Its a lot easier to replicate a part if you have one, all be it worm out/mullered.

Meanwhile...

Ground the backs off the counter weight pivots pins. The plate is bent and worn.

I’ll build up the wear with weld. Test fit before hand to make sure I can face off the weld. Will have to tappy tap tap, the plate to straighten it up. A replacement assembly is available @£195. Looks like they have added circlips to the pivot pins. Not sure I’ll bother

Stuarts used to sell a simple replacement manual dizzy, advance/retard was by a cable controlled lever on the handle bar, just like the old days, a retrograde step but it worked.

I had one on my S7, the only problem was when it got hot and expanded it was so sloppy as to be useless, cos the loose top meant the points were moving about so much against the cam.

Luckily I had a friend in the applied sciences lab in Brighton uni, he turned a nylon bush to go on the base which wouldn't fit until the base had been in liquid nitrogen for a bit.

Clever micro measuring and internal turning of the top part resulted in it being solid when cold, but smooth as smoooothy smooth thing when hot, one just had to remember to fully retard it after a run or expect a broken leg at the next cold kick start!

Turning the weld down in the lathe didnt work, so into the mill.
Took 0.005" off the lot. It also allowed the Pivot pin holes to be spot faced. The difference between the spot face and the rub strip gave me the washer thickness for the new pivot pins.

As luck would have it. I couldn't take the same amount off both sides. The metal around the Rear hole is thinner, faced to 0.85. The front (as pictured) is 0.65. enough to get the pins Square for welding and a bearing surface for the counter weights.

Lazy day today. A handful of Thackeray washers arrived, so I could try them on the spark plug cover. Hopefully I wont loose these fancy knobs

Brass and phenolic sheet, they were the slugs out of the annular cutter I used to bore the holes in the carb spacers.

Looking for suitable circlips, I found these clevis pins.


unfortunately 6mm would mean removing too much material from the counter weights. Pity as the head would have turned down to locate in the plate, to be welded up from the back.

Fibre washer under the rotor plate has started to eat into the housing.


In the lathe with only a couple of mm bite. Backed up with the fixed steady.



The outside runs fairly truth to the face. Never the less, lightly held in the fixed, slow rpm, light cut and feed. Just needs cleaning up and opening up to take a Delrin bush
Lots stick out to get past the fixed steady.
