Mine is an ACV 2.5TDi. I can't be absolutely certain, but I think that the 'thump' I heard was the engine trying to fire/catch. As it got closer to firing the thumps became more regular, if you know what I mean. I also remember when my old Transit suffered something similar, seeing the mechanic filling the new filter with diesel prior to fitting it, doubtless to reduce the time taken cranking and minimise the air in the system.I have changed the fuel filter on the ACV engined (2.5tdi) T4 it takes approx. 1 1/2 to 2 minutes of cranking to get the fuel to fill and through to the injectors. I remember being thankful that the battery was up to the job.
It could be possible that the fuel pump timing could have slipped, the bang you mention. It is possible to get these start and run the engine normally with pump timing out but it does need a lot of extra cranking to start. I found this out after doing the cam belts etc. I had to wait to get a temperature sensor as it needs to be at running temperature to allow you so I could set the pump timing up on the laptop. It can also be done with a dial indicator.
