this was the other day...
I was asked to make a new truck box lid.

I thought I'll do it for very little, it will teach me a thing or two about how to make proper folds (I've barely used the press brake since I bought it!)

It came out alright...

...unfortunately I'd misread my own drawing and made it 30mm too big in both directions

Not today but yesterday afternoon. Borrowed coring rig from work to make a big hole in the garden wall for a drain for the new patio that's going in. 122mm hole 450mm through breezeblock then concrete and finally into a surface water drain chamber. Took longer to mount to the wall than actually core the hole.

You're not alone. Around a year ago we decided to renew the liner to our pond with tailored butyl liner. I duly measured up, double-checked and sent the measurements and a diagram to the company. The finished product arrived a few days later, made exactly to my measurements. Only one problem, for some reason I'd halved the length. The next one was the right size and fitted perfectly. As for the half-size failure, that went into a 4" x 2" framework around 2 feet square topped-off with decking which was set up as a wild life pond. It looks OK but I have a feeling it may not have existed if I'd got the measurements right first time!

Tap extension to get at the spark plugs on my old cbr6. I put a helicoil in, badly, 2.5 years ago, and it strips the thread off plugs. It appears to be seated ok, so I am going to try tapping it, which worked on my test peices.
At 125k miles I will need to look for a new bike soon anyway, but no idea what I want!

Part 1.


Defiantly finished today.
How ever these two projects were started a few days ago.



I got this lathe bed in July 2016. Destined for MIS for a restoration project for a tool stand, flower stand or something.
But due to an issue with "ownership" it never happened.
It ended up sitting in my garden, shed and workshop ever since.

But, there is always a but.
I got this bundle of old fittings.


The two items on the LHS fitted the lathe bed, the bolts had the look for an old lathe and they fitted the holes..

So a Plan was hatched.

From these remains.





Stage one.



Oil Blackened fixings.



All the old paint removed. It was a pain.
Paint stripper did not hurt it. Power tools, just smeared it and produced smoke. Solvents just made a gloopy mess.
Flames, plus the above methods and hard hitting with a pressure washer had to a suitable point were paint would be able to be used.



Just warming things up.
This is normal for a paraffin torch warming up outside.
Looks good.

In place.
The wooden feet are from a bundle of wood I was given. It was oak flooring offcuts.



Even found a few bits of wood to make a shelf for something.

Part 2.

This is just a fun rebuild.



This was taken in 2016, after it was pulled from a ivy bush. That had grown up round it since 2002..

It has been kicked round the garden, the sheds and a trailer for a while.



Getting it ready.



Grey undercoat, rust killing paint(Oh we will see). Red primer.
The rubbing strips have been sealed with nail varnish remover and varnish. Followed by sanding sealer, then pure varnish.



Finished.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!.
I know it is not in any thing like the real colours a toy like this should be painted in.
But, there are good reasons.

But, I think I have to.

Today I started on a 1/3rd size spacer to add to the Flymo, I just need a little closer cut and adding a full spacer results in scalping on the 'curved' area of the grass.



Also finished coating the fence(s) with Cuprinol Rich Oak preservative, but you all know what fences look like so no pics.

I really need to get a press rake

I need to re-tool it now. Plain tooling doesn't really work for folding boxes, and I want a bit more flexibility. One of those sides was cut out for relief, and the other side was folded in the bench vice
To get the segmented tooling I want, it'll be £1500 plus my toolholders need machining or replaced as well, owch. Not exactly cost effective for the use it gets.

Nothing air related, the cylinders days are numbered and relegated to dead weight which is exactly what it will be, filled with all the scrap I can find and topped up with a bit of antifreeze to add more weight. That will hopefully keep the centre of gravity low enough to counteract the weight of my grinders, cables and Tig welding rods hanging off like a hat stand. No fixed plans or drawings other than staying within a 400 x 400mm area so it can be tucked out of the way when not being used, it's just evolving as I go.

Oh Rowlocks.
Cast top for the bird bath, I think it is no longer water tight.

The crack was old, very little was holding it.



3 metal pins across the crack. But not glued or fixed yet.
The crack was opened up, to give a decent bead for the glue stage.
The clamps, here are holding the 2 halves in line, so I can open the crack and clean up the stone.




Pitch pine strips, again across the crack. But out of line of the steel 6mm bars.
1 side is fixed with the screws going vertical. The other side the holes and fixings were drilled at a 10Deg angle.
So when you screw them up, it pulls the joint even tighter.



Glued up.
The metal pins.
2 pack glue.

The wood parts.
Can't believe it is not nails.

The crack.
2 pack stone resin glue.
A word to the wise, it will get hot.

The clamps are not holding it compressed.
But to make it easier to move round to glue.
The 4 screws, at the angle pulled the too halves up very tight.



Sealed with exterior grade stone sealer.



Back in place. Ready for water.

Feeling a bit below par today , but decided I'd better crack on with this little job. I turned a 2/3 full width spacer while I was at it, it was all going SO well until I snapped the point off the parting-off tool while making the locating pins - and no, I don't have another of the same style. May have to grind one from tool steel as it'll take too long to come from Banggood. Oh, well, that's for another day.....

I rolled these today after searching the South of England for a Y size bottle of Argon. If I had Argon I could make a blade for the bandsaw and cut them from a length of exhaust pipe. I have no exhaust pipe so I rolled them just for the hell of it.
