2 years ago I got given these 2 Old style modern benches.
Good steel frames, but with very cheep wood and fixings.
But I liked the back design.
Last year I made this from the smaller one, I posted about it.
But the double one sat around as I pondered what to do with it.
Getting decent lengths of hard wood for the slats was expensive, plus it was not needed at the time. Cutting the nice back down to a suitable size was not possible and be pleasing to my eye.
So, I hatched a cunning plan. Well a friend planted the idea in my head. She complained that the modern single garden seats were to narrow to allow a good flop around in. The width was to narrow.
She challenged me, to make a nice relaxing seat, but I am not allowed to buy anything new. I could use stock, materials and fixings from my stores and hiding places.
I have until Saturday to complete, or I am buying the beer and curry!!!!!
I rummaged in wood shed and found 3 bits of hard wood, ex door steps.
I ripped them down, routed a bead on the edges and using old project varnish gave them 3 coats.
Assembly.
The screw holes were opened up to 6mm and 4 mm dia. slotted screws used to fix the lower slats.
They are not done up tight just yet. I need a bit of flex to assemble the rest.
Rear Slats
I bring the upper arms in under tension and fix, starting at the bottom one, then the top and work my may through.
@barking mat Yes, that is slow match.
You will not the lower stringer is not fitted yet.
Lower stringer fitted and pulled in tight to put the frame under small amount of tension
If you note the lower stringer is angled.
My excuse is:
It will shed water.
It lines up with the castings on the side frames.
I was to lazy to shape it.

My friend has excepted she lost the challenge, beer and curry will be arranged for tomorrow night.
But, she does not coming second.
She saw the bits I had left over.
These are the said bits.

So, I had a coffee. Had good think.
This is the idea I came up with.
Oh a mote point.
I don't like having something in my garden that is just decorative.
The plants were chosen for a reason as well.

The 4 Allan bolts were recessed into the wood. A standard Flat6 bit was used for the main hole. The hole for the shank was, again with a flat bit. But with a bit and brace.
Why?
It was a Bit and brace bit, I had just sharpened it and why not.
Tools are to be used.

In place, turns a old lathe bed into a useful thing.

But it will not be living outside, it has other duties to preform.
So before I tidy up, I am having a coffee and a sticky bun.
Oh yes.
Still have bits left over.

I am going to turn those bits into charcoal.
But, she does not coming second.

This is a very nice little wet and grinder.
Nice smooth stone, that produces a sharp edge. But This use caused the leather washers to crumble.
2 of the 4 leather blanks.
This showed me that, "Ready to use" Leather punches are not "ready to use.
LHS by the grinder, was sharp. But not sharp enough to cut leather, so I had to dress them.
Sharp and cutting with a few good blows with a hammer (@Parm not yours, mine.)
In place, all side ways movement stopped.
Just got to assemble, after coffee and test.

Just finished making a couple of small tables for the garden. They were made from some scrap steel I had laying around. Tops are stainless and the legs are mild steel.
Have to say that I am quite pleased with them, especially the TIG welding. Not welded for many years and they turned out quite well.

No, they were bolt holes that were already drilled in the stainless I had.
Could maybe used for holders, have not thought about that.

Mhhh, I thought things were going too well with the drill job.
Remember I mentioned a "crack" when the old chuck came free? Well in the course of cleaning the chuck guard scale stop [I don't have the guard anyway so it's not the end of the world if I can't fix it - of course the part's NLA from Meddings]. BUT, the missing bit's definitely in the corner of the cave somewhere, so tomorrows job is to carefully clear the whole area one thing at a time until I find it.
I found those numbers when cleaning, 13 would be the original chuck capacity but surely the drill's older than that? I thought about 70s?
Then, I can have a go at brazing [for the second time ever] or there's always JB Weld.....
.
At least these are all present & correct, apparently one or more are often missing or damaged, so that's a bonus
Oh, well......it'll be like "The Hunt for Red October" in the cave tomorrow.

My adventures with English wheeling are going well. Someone told me years ago that it’s easy to wheel a shape but hard to wheel the shape you want. That makes total sense to me now.
