What 10"/25cm chainsaw

Had my fill of clearing trees off roads in the middle of the night,I don't miss being on call or having to get up to get the kit on the low loader in the missing rain/snow/dark/storm and get there to working with a bunch of guys that have all been pulled out of pubs

I wouldn't. I went through exactly this recently as I've got a fair few M18 tools. I popped into our local tractor place who are a Husky and Stihl dealer and the kit price for the baby Husky was cheaper than the bare unit Milwaukee.

Dad's had one for a few years and rates it very highly, as @8ob says forget the fumes etc.

OK I was more interested in a small one because of going up ladders and pruning trees etc. This one is actually light enough that you can use it one handed stretched out, not that I've done that!


Chain sharpness makes a big difference to battery life but put it this way, I cut up enough wood from stripping out a barn to fill the back of a Sandringham 6x6 on a single battery.

And typically on the very last cut I hit a ****ing nail

Tanaka make a decent saw.
Still think stihl are the best.

Best part of £100 cheaper than the bare M18. That was a single battery and charger and chainsaw.

The training is quite intense. You have to have a lot of the other modules before you can do wind blow. I’m trained for single and multiple blown trees. Multiple blow is a slow job and very very dangerous, a machine is the preferred method of dealing with these now. I used to love it, keeps you very much on your toes.

We never attend anything windblown without a hiab with grab
But have been out with 13 tonners and grab during the last 2 weeks
Barely have to go near them with a saw by the time a machine gets hold of it
I think the biggest thing is being able to look 10 steps ahead and work out what reaction each cut has

If anybody is travelling about with a saw in case of trees blown over the road. If you don’t know what your doing, leave them for a pro. Windblow will kill you if you get it wrong. There are special techniques for dealing with them.

Absolutely right. Old saying "The tree is more dangerous than the saw" applies to both standing and fallen timber (and to hand saws as well as power saws). If I cut off that limb, will it drop straight down, or might if get snarled up somewhere and fall onto my head? Might it un-balance things and cause another part of the tree to twist round and hit me? Potential for lots of things to go wrong. The golden rule is to take your time, and never allow yourself to pressured into getting a road cleared quickly.

Here ya go - the little Husky 120i chainsaw cut this load of wood on under one battery charge, that's a 100x66" bed I think. Mixture of dryish and sopping wet wood. Some of it was rotten some of it was bloody hard, good old fashioned wood (no idea how old the woodwork was but the stables are of early Victorian era).

I bought a little Komatsu top handle saw made in Japan ... ..when I first came here ...I have pruned loads of trees, cut tons of firewood with it over the last 14 years had 3 new bars , a few new chains and one new sparkplug ...still runs fine....

Timely thread , this just arrived this morning as I had makita batteries ... just done a few cuts ... my first ever chainsaw use . I intend booking some training it's just for cutttinf firewood but want to do it safely

Anyone got any advice on ppe ..... I presume trousers and helmet as a minimum ?

I repair chainsaws pretty much daily here, got two on the bench right now, Stihl 025 (chain oil pump change) and a MS180C (just had new piston rings / crank bearings / seals).. from my experience in terms of repair and parts etc, the best are Stihl, Husky (including old Jonsered) and Echo... then theres the rest... Personal preference is Stihl, really easy to work on and parts simple / quick to find. I'd say better to buy a good second hand one rather than a new cheap noname brand..

Don't understand why folks think of them as difficult to get running after a lay off, there's nothing to them. Simple really.

^^other than the obvious kit (glasses, ear defenders etc), I reckon the best PPE for a chainsaw is a brain, always make sure it's engaged first. Always think about what your doing and if you have any doubt, stop put the saw down and think it through.

nice cordless makita, my 240V one makita it has done plenty of work over the last 7 years mainly fire wood a few trees and some fence posts

For anyone that wants them I have a pair of Oregon chainsaw trousers size large free to a good home if the are collected from Surrey
They are the old fashioned type need a wash as I spilt chain oil down the front but only worn a couple of times

For anyone who wants to buy a pair of chainsaw trousers for home use Engelbert Strauss do a really good pair for just over a hundred quid that are as good as the Stihl and husqvarna ones
Nothing like anything else in the price range which are very heavy
