Obviously not the same animal as a petrol saw but more than good enough for dicing up log wood, you would get a few hours use from a couple of charged up batteries if you keep the saw sharp and don’t lean on it too hard.

All the battery saws I have seen have a rear control handle ....I have always felt top handle saws nicer to use ...does any one make a battery saw with a top handle?

Yes but you need a ticket to purchase one in the uk
Top handle saws have less control and are sold solely for use in a tree in the uk

Yeah I just googled it .it seems Stilh do one ..I have never taken any tests for chainsaw use ...But I s'pose I used one for 40 years .. I had always thought the rules would say don't use a rear handle up a tree, and that seems right to me ...my lovely light 10 inch top handle saw get used for everything these days ...I find my bigger saw hard work ...

For anyone that wants them I have a pair of Oregon chainsaw trousers size large free to a good home if the are collected from Surrey
They are the old fashioned type need a wash as I spilt chain oil down the front but only worn a couple of times

For anyone who wants to buy a pair of chainsaw trousers for home use Engelbert Strauss do a really good pair for just over a hundred quid that are as good as the Stihl and husqvarna ones
Nothing like anything else in the price range which are very heavy

They will still use rear handles up trees for big stuff it just requires them to get into a better position to use it
They would happily ban top handles all together but rear handles arnt practice at the tips of trees

Yup. Wouldn't use one anywhere other than up a tree. Don't have the control you get with a standard saw

I agree with most of you
Stihl in my opinion is the way to go
Husqvarna are great but them have a very bad reputation down here ,hard to start etc
Echo are great .
As for every tool the brand choice is something personal
Nothing will last forever and nothing is problem free
Also a Lidl chainsaw makes the job done and could be very reliable if you maintain it correctly
I use to repair chainsaws ,edge trimmers, blowers etc
My favourites are Stihl , because they are simply well made , easy to fix, easy to find both original or Knock off parts .
Husqvarna is my second choice .
Echo are just nothing compared to Stihl ,parts are difficult to find here and they have not the same reputation of Stihl .
As for everything maintenance makes the difference
Every single small engine equipment require love
Correct fuel mix , heating them up prior using , correct break down expecially if new ,or sitting for awhile.
Pour the gas and run them out of fuel
Cleaning the air filter , and the equipment itself
Another thing I like to do is release the chain tensioner
Clean the spark arrestor and the exhaust
Change the spark plug

All this prior storing to prevent issues

Most of them requires to adjust the carb periodically because climatic conditions will be different in winter than in summer
In summer carb tuning will result more rich ,in winter will result more lean
That's because air density
There are electronic ones out there which adjust automatically the carburettor

Another brand I would like to advise to check out is ACTIVE
An Italian company which started producing high performance go-kart engines in the 90s
They produce small engines and garden equipment , they are brilliant and powerful
But the biggest advice is asking to professional users in your area , look what they use and what you can buy in your area ,there are surely small engine repair shops in your area ,ask them which brand they have parts available .
A chainsaw is a small investment and you should think not only about buying and using but also to do when it will need maintenance
And for sure it will do

About the battery powered STIHL chainsaw I can say that it as enough power to cut down 2 big trees and divide them in logs
Last year two big eucalyptus trees fell down on my house because a wind storm ,the scorbutic bastard owner didn't tell us nothing ,I noticed that it happened because once went upstairs I've seen the trees on my roof
He called an arborist who worked all day long with one of those little battery Stihl chainsaws
About the owner he didn't tell us nothing and he didn't pay the damages
