Octavia and Passat gearbox compatible?

Just wondering if anyone knows whether the gearboxes would be the same.
The Passat is a 2.0 TDi, so diesel and the Octavia is 2.0 FSi, so petrol.
Both are 6 speed but I have a feeling that the ratios would be different and thus not suitable even if they could be swapped but thought I would ask in case someone has knowledge of such a thing.

Pretty sure they are not.
Get a reg number for both cars.
Go onto eurocarparts, put the reg number in and look up clutch kits for both cars and see if they are both the same part numbers.

I'm sure the diesel has a bigger input shaft and more spines for a start.
You could probably find the gear box ratios easy enough via the internet for both cars.
If you have vin numbers for both pm them over and I can find the part numbers for the gearboxes. Should also be able to see what cars the same box was fitted to.

No they won't be the same, physically they might use the same same casing but ratios will definitely be different and as hotponyshoes said input shaft will be different too.

Then I should be able to give you a list of what cars that part number has been fitted into.

Reminds me of when I had an early Montego 1.3 that broke the gearbox (at just over a year old !) Went to a breakers and was told a Montego gearbox was £150 so I asked about a 1500 Golf gearbox - £50. They were exactly the same gearbox

A lot of parts get shared between cars you just have to know where to look.
The balance pipe for a discovery is £330 from a land rover dealer.
It comes in a land rover bag with a ford part number stamped on the pipe itself.
Buy it from a ford dealer and its £120.

Thanks, appreciate it. Not sure which way I will jump yet. I like the car, not a patch on the Legacy but...
I think it is the diff that is going, actually thought it was a wheel bearing on nearside but jacked up that side and put in gear and no noise. Jacked up the other and the noise was there, went under the car and could't hear the noise, or it was really faint but inside the car it was loud so must be travelling through the body.

Might go down that route, can't afford to have the car off the road for any more than a day but may buy a banger to use until I can get my *almost* banger fixed. Dont think the other half will lend me her car to use as she knows what state it would be returned in

The pressure plate bolts to engine fly wheel,

If the splined gearbox shafts are different sizes, does that matter if the relevant clutch plate is attached to the gearbox splined shaft?

Vague idea, that's all.

Were currently bolting a non suitable marine gearbox to an engine and as long as the holes in the gearbox match the fly wheel housing it's just a question of the coupling, or clutch in your case.

No idea on ratios, diesels 'used to' rev lower.....

Mate bought a Merc B class at auction but when he drove it the transmission went into limp mode and the eml came on. Took it to a indy Merc specialist and they diagnosed the ECU (a common fault)
That was replaced but the fault remained! They eventually found it was the wrong gearbox with a different final drive ratio on the diff and the ECU was spazzing out as it was getting the wrong signals.
In the end they swapped the diffs and it now seems ok....

I once replaced the diff in my Sierra and all was well until I realized I was now doing 85mph when the speedo read 70!!!
Left it until it got written off...... 3 times
Got my money back and some

TDV6? Is this the exhaust balance pipe or fuel rail one? Either way it doesn't surprise me, but that engine is a good one to shop round on as the LION V6 is used in a lot of different vehicles - Jag's, Citroens, Peugeots as well as Ford & LR

This is why vehicles now use the ABS hall sensors to figure out road speed now

Sometimes you can mix and match but that's more of a project than a one-day repair job!

The new clutch plate will need to be the correct inner and outer diameter for the flywheel.
It will need to be the correct thickness as well otherwise it will either slip constantly or bind constantly.
The input shaft on the gearbox also need to hold the pressure plate at the correct fore/aft distance.
The end of the input shaft will go into a bearing in the end of the crankshaft so that needs to be the same size also.

If it was a petrol gearbox you might stand a chance but trying to put a diesel box in a petrol is going to be a lot of hassle and research on the parts needed.

I would be expecting 3-400 for a used box and its not exactly a rare or hard to find motor?

Plus you have to have some empathy for the next guy you sell it to who might try changing a clutch on his drive one weekend and be expecting to go back to work on the monday. He will be scratching his head when the new clutch kit he bought won't fit.
