Today I made - A Mistake.

Quite an expensive one, was my favourite boring bar too. 18mm, through coolant, anti-vibration :-(



Looking for a replacement but looking on banggood as I just cannot stretch to £200+ Can't find any though, do Banggood do Carbide boring bars?

OOPS!! did that to a 12mm one a few years back, was kicking myself
What dia is that? I was thinking of getting one from China from eBay a while back when I was having issues with chatter when doing some F51, ended up getting a Stellram steel bar that I had load of inserts for and it worked great. Might still get one though.

I will take anything as a stop gap. There are a couple on ebay but they have been cut down to 100mm which is no good at all. 12mm would be better than none. I have a couple of big Sandvik bars but they just don't compare to a big carbide. Through coolant too...... I could weep!

@Onoff mentioned printing a fridge handle that got me thinking of a part I made.
Broke a plastic fridge handle so wanted something more durable, went for sheet metal.
Could have done something simple but liked the challenge to copy the shape instead.
It's fairly complex shape but the real challenge is the small size and weld without distorsion.

Final result was coated twice with spray filler then painted, no other fillet used.

I've been struggling with back pain a while but today I was able to do some work for the first time in a week. Got parts back from powder coat and hot galv yesterday so I put up half of it. Treating my back with some single malt now so hopefully there will be more done tomorrow.

I've been having a problem with mice getting into a kitchen cupboard through an over size hole in the back of it for the stop tap. Unfortunately where I think the mice are getting in from outside is covered in decking so need a clear couple of days to lift it and sort properly. Made a quick plate to cover the hole as a temporary solution. Would usually make something like this from wood but had nothing thinner than 18mm so used a piece of scrap 2mm aluminium.

Made this thing today because I was thinking to repair the ladder step but I couldn't because logistics (my mother washed a lot of t-shirts ,and the ladder requires a lot of grinding )
So I couldn't kill my welding desire today and I figured out to make this useful tool
Used two pieces of flat stock (20x8mm) from the scrap bin
Chamfered both sides leaving 1mm landing
Welded using 2.5mm 7018 just because I like to run LH rods and I didn't use them since a month or two cos everything I welded in this period of time required using 6013
Set my inverter around 100A and to be honest it was little bit hot but I am to lazy to dial the welder 5 or 10A less
So I left little bit of undercut but I think that it's also because my manipulation
So now it's your task to understand what I made just for Jocking little bit since today is Saturday and I am the only guy in this world that doesn't go to the disco

Cleaned up my ground clamp and my electrode holder because I like them shining

Vmax liners are 82.93 od, 76mm id

Quick question to the knowledgable, these liners are pressed in, how hot should I make the block? Planning to use my ceramic plate to warm it up, put liners in the freezers, and bang em in.

Use a 100 watt bulb in the bottom of cylinder for 24 hrs, switched on ,covered with a bit of steel sheet over the cylinder to retain the heat . Hire a cylinder press ram and weld up a sound jig for it .

One engine I did was enclosed in a cut down steel oil drum again with several 100 watt bulbs inside the cylinders as heaters . The liners were put in the freezer in poly bags for the same 24 hrs.... don't bang them in … They slid in with hand pressure only but if they were stiff I'd already sorted out to use a scissor jack on two length of studding with a cross bar of wood on the cylinder and one of steel at the top . If you don't have a jack or proper press use two long lengths of 19 mm threaded rod studding and two thick flat bars and nuts to quickly & continuously wind the them in . Use a welded up modified hex socket inside a long steel tube so it will go over the exposing threads all the way to the final point . , spray lube the outer wall surfaces to help
