Medding Drills Ebay purchase. No motor. What replacement?

I recently purchased a Meddings MF4/3 but it didn't come with a motor. It has a flex with a main plug on it and a rotating switch with 3 positions which is not connected to any wires.

First question what replacement motor? I did get in touch with Medding who very kindly send me copies of various Medding manuals and they where able to tell me the date of manufacture (1977) but they where no help for a replacement motor or the spec to go source one.

I'd find a nice British motor about 1/3rd -1/2 HP for it..........

probably half hp if only mainly drilling up to half inch .3/4 if drilling larger ones on regular basis

They had reverse as standard I think the ones we have do anyway

I believe my elliot drill is a 3/4hp. Thing doesnt stop for anything. Put a 25mm hole through 2inch steel like it was nothing.

My Elliot is 3/4hp (the original Hoover motor), but looks like the Meddings MF4/3 was supplied with 1/2hp

Mine too, at least it was before I fitted a 3-phase motor. Much smoother.

Thank you all for the replies. So far general consensus is 3/4hp for heavy drilling which is very unlikely or 1/2hp. Meddings says the original machine is 3phase which I have at the workshop should I consider a 3phase motor??

Found the motor plate(3phase) which I've attached from another thread on here which gives me motor speed, now i need to confirm shaft size(I do have the rear pulley) and motor mounting type?

3 phase motor possibly cheaper than single phase and smaller physical size. just depends if u ever move or sell it to which one u get

Exactly my thoughts Brightspark - its only a rented w/shop and land lord is getting on! if it comes to garage at home I don't have three phase :-(

So single phase 3/4hp 1440rpm motor needed, shaft size I should know when I get to workshop, motor mounting type? How many types of foot mount motors are there?? Ive seen listing for B3 and B34 casings??

foot mountings are bolted to a baseplate and are all similar in size . u might just have to drill some fresh mounting holes in the plate. to suit new motor

So finally I got around to ordering a single phase motor from Ebay (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271249401835) and them finally got around to installing is and crudely wiring it to a plug top check all worked ok.

Have recently ordered a new emergency stop and on/off control and I'm now thinking about converting to a keyless chuck.... possibly this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07W818SBM/?ref=exp_manorwood_dp_vv_d

My problem is I don't know what shank type my Meddings MF4/3 drill is??

Pop it out and check the dims.
Be able to find sizes to reference from on the web for the different tapers

Ive just noticed the motor listing pics, front dust seal wrong way round. Checked mine in shed, same.

Thank you eLuSiVeMiTe and Kram, I'm working away over the Xmas period and during my 12hr shifts in a hotel i'm amusing myself by purchasing items I believe I need for the workshop! It won't be till the new yr before i can double check the shank type but as in the listing from Kram i'm sure it will be a morse taper no 3! Thank you both

Never too late to the party! Im alway happy to see pics of another meddings still going strong. I did consider the 3phase option as I would have opted for speed control on the convertor(240v) but to much money in the end :-(

Too much money My lathe 3ph vfd conversion cost half what my lathe cost and after 6 weeks doing it, Im no where near done.
