I made a crap water feature.

It was supposed to be a filter, just a proof of concept. The cloth on the outlet wasn't fine enough (And too small) and the stuff I wanted to filter is floating so I need to skim the surface somehow. That or just drain the pool, my brother insisted we put it up when it was really hot and it's not been touched since.

Well today was the day of the knives, weather was poor so most of the boats took a day off and did some maintenance.
I got 4 of the Spencer Carter wear covers to fill up.

I was also asked to make 2 of my own design ones.
Why is my first weld in stainless always half decent

I then had to make up 4 rudder bushes, each one slightly different OD but thankfully I didn't have to go out in the torrential rain to measure as the skipper got the bushes out intact.

Today I made shelving.
A bit different from my normal metal working and machinery...the mrs wanted shelving for her new lamps... so I took two scaffolding boards and set about the task...I shant explain all the process but rustic is what she wanted.

Good evening gents, seem quite a few of you have been busy so I thought I would do something as well.

Got this off a trawler late last week, owner said it was not working, possibly seized. Could you get it looked at and can I have it on Monday!

First job was to get some S/S bar and machine up the center pin, in my opinion too small diamater, but that is what he wanted, 25mm

Next was to get the 25mm plate for where the boom actually attaches, cut to shape, bore a 32mm hole through for the pin. Now this plate is EHSP wear plate so used a cobalt annular cutter for the bore. The annular cutter still didn't like it

After some weld prep, attached it to the 100mm diameter bar with a 1" bore

Welding consisted of preheat to about 120c, weld and interpass temp to be about 180c. First pass .8mm root followed by 1.2mm solid at about 28.5v, with a cup of tea between runs, total 6 passes on both sides.

Post welding into a thermal blanket to slowly cool. Completed welding about 6.00pm last night, back in the workshop today 10.30 am and it was still about 50c. I will call that a good slow cooldown.

Still got to drill, thread for the grease nipple today and start the fitting tomorrow. Boring out the rusty holes in the bottom bracket of the boom will be interesting tomorrow as it is in position on the cabin roof and with the winches on it weight over 1500kg. On site will still have to drill and counter drill the horizontal pin (32mm) for the grease to get through!

I love the word " rustic" it means get the wood out of a skip, don't bother with cutting it straight and use wonky tools.

Today, well mostly yesterday but I didn't get it finished till after midnight, I made a hand wheel for a mini lathe out of a bit of scrap steel bar.






Trickiest bit was making the slot for the key-way and I up-cycled a broach out of an old easy-out.
It worked but was about as good at broaching as an easy-out is at removing broken studs, i.e. not very.
Just used the main feed on the lathe to drive the broach but it wasn't great. (Far to flexible)



I stuck the easy-out to the flat bar with the tig using 2.5 copper wire for filler.
Not pretty but it didn't fall off.



Now I could have bought a new hand wheel for a £5 odd but wheres the fun in that.
Also the key is made into the plastic of the wheel so they fail for fun (I assume) and I was able to make it bigger.

Anyone got any tips for broaching a 2mm key ways in a 5mm hole?
I've two more to make.

In the good old days when I just had very basic tools I would bore a hole the size of the key at the correct position and then bore out the centre hole afterwards thus leaving a half round keyway that could then be filed out square.

Thanks @Hood great tip as always.

I'll give that a go although drilling a 2mm and a 5mm overlapping hole in close proximity might be a problem for me.
Drilling the small hole first is bound to help but the key way is about 12mm long.
Would I be better drilling 2 number 2mm holes then open out the central hole to 5mm?
Or better to do the 5mm in one go?

I would bore the 2mm then go right in with the 5mm after using a spot drill (or centre drill) to make sure the 5mm is on point.
