Leather workers gripping pliers.

Can’t see if they have a hammer face on them. If so, they are used more in the handmade leather shoe area. Grip leather, pull tight, then bash in nail with hammer face. Amazing to watch a real craftsman using them.

I don’t know if they are called Cantle pliers, or if that’s just the American name for the standard wide pliers (exactly the same, but without the hammer face). Very good for gripping, pulling, nipping, and shaping leather, for bags, or bag handles, that sort of thing.

Had another look, and the red circled bit is the hammer face, so definitely cobblers pliers. I think the Cantle is the bit on the back of a saddle your bottom butts up against (pun intended).

I’m wrong, cantle is a common name for that part of the saddle.

I definitely, possibly, maybe, almost sure, or maybe not, think that they might be cobblers pliers, or not.

I’m confused, they are quite long jawed, and they’re not smooth inside. Usually they’re smooth inside to not mark the leather. Those ones would leave crimp marks.

Unless they are for crimping the leather on the cantle?

Come on, I’m running out of ideas here!

Are they for gripping the edge to allow it to be drawn taught before nailing? The crimped edge being hidden by a finishing strip.

Was given this earlier:




for helping out a bordering on distressed couple on their way to the Lake District who had stopped at the services with a puncture on their wobble box. Thankfully they had a spare, but no jack or wheel brace, or much idea at all , so while he got the spare wheel out, I treated her to the “crowbar, wooden wedge, and 8’ lorry timbers” routine, then connected a 60’ air hose to the truck and whipped the nuts off with my trusted windy gun. Spare wheel on and nuts tightened with change out of 15 minutes, and for good measure I checked the punctured tyre over. Couldn’t find anything apart from a slightly loose valve, so the tyre inflator was deployed and plenty of wind put in the tyre, by which time his face was a pure picture! “Bl***y Hell, what else have you got in your truck??”

Money was offered, but for all of 15 minutes work? Even I’m not that mercenary. “It’s a warm morning, buy me an ice cream” said I, in joke. 5 minutes later, they reappeared from the services with a most welcome Magnum, then after effusive thanks they wobbled off up the M6 in the general direction of Cumbria. Wobble boxes, whatever next....

A few years ago there was a lady in a car park with a flat car battery. I pulled my car over, got out the jump leads & had her car going in a few minutes. She was trying to give me £20, I flatly refused & told her to give it to a charity & asked her to help anybody she came across in difficulty.

The favour has repaid me twice over, I have broken down myself twice & both times somebody stopped to help me.

It's nice to be nice!

years ago when i had a old square shaped skoda 25 30years ago broke down knocked on a door sorry can you help and can we ring the other halfs dad

responce was whats the problem siad cars broken down skoda bloke come out said let me have a look tested a few bits you need a condencer a rotor arm a and a few service bits

this was on a sunday 3pm bloke said wait here after 40 mins he come back heres the parts fitted car started run fine i thanked him gave him some cash and asked how did you get the parts

he replyed i am the manager of the local skoda dealers i went to the stores and come back with the parts

never forgot that mans help and try to do what i can to repay to others

A pair of 16" water pump pliers marked 'Classic, Made in Germany'. Nearest I can find online are the 12" version costing £30! Jaws & pivot in great condition, the handles need some heat shrink added!
A record 121 6" g-clamp, this is a heavy duty forged steel clamp, £60 to buy new! Just needs a shoe making on the lathe.

Got them both for £12!

Samsung colour laser printer with toner cartridges & some paper, £10!

A joiners tool box, been looking for a decent one of these for ages and this came with some goodies inside!
