I had one of my favourite mugs in the workshop last week when I was grinding, didn't notice anything until I went to use it again after being through the dishwasher. It now has loads of rusty spots inside! A hand wash & another dishwasher session & they're still there, now soaking in bleach as a last resort.

I would be more likely to use the dishwasher as a wife cleaner if she appeared back!

Thankfully she is now in another country, making some other poor sods life miserable!


I already have 2 old dishwasher to use as parts cleaners should the need arise!

I used patio cleaner to get rust stains off a porcelain sink.

Oxalic acid will remove it and not damage the mug either, i use on everything from wood & concrete to the fibreglass deck of my boat.

You could also try putting a teaspoon of washing soda in the mug and then top up with boiling water. This method removes tea stains so should work with rust spots.
