Extra items in your vehicle breakdown kit?

Wheel bearings! Do they often suddenly wear out or what?
Dont get me wrong, I love Landies (from a safe distance.. )

Sadly they do. I love landers and ken two but hate them as they break when a cloud comes over and they don’t like the colour of it. You think Italian thoroughbreds are highly strung

I always fit quality Timken bearings and oem seals and have never had a catastrophic failure. I have either heard a rumble or had abs fault come up with wear though have seen some horror stories with Britpart wheel bearings.

When I have been doing heavy offroading, I regularly check them as I have gone through a fair few.

I have a spare set of hubs with new bearings and seals on the landy spares shelf in the garage along with lock washers, UJ's and brake pads but had not thought of carrying wheel bearings.

Changing a flat tyre is as far as I would go at the road side. Anything else & I would just get the vehicle recovered for anything mechanical. Would rather repair at home with all tools available

Right enough bearing life decreases dramatically with big tyres and offset rims, I have only fitted 255/85 R16 MT's. We get more broken half shafts than wheel bearings offroading.

Price of having my van brought home on a lorry makes breakdown cover a no brainier.
Costs me £120 a year any vehicle me or the wife are in or anyone transporting my children about.

Cost me near 200 to have my van bought home off my own back.

Mind you I probably cost myself an extra £100+ a year in fuel dragging all the tools & stuff I have in the back of mine. Swings & roundabouts I suppose.

Although it doesn't live in the back full-time I do chuck my chainsaw + oil + petrol in the back whenever we have strong winds forecast so I can clear fallen trees enough for me to get past.

I started doing this after taking over 4 hours extra to get home due to constantly having to turn around and try another route due to all the fallen trees.

As always it's a gamble. Mine came home on a lorry last month when the uch gave up. Had to push the aa not to send a repair van. Trying to explain unless you have a new secondary ecu/uch and the ability to code it on site your wasting your time. Someone with a bit of sense played ball in the end.

I'd rather have it and not need it than the other way.

Couple of strips of old carpet are very handy in the snow too.

^^ Fitted with a piece of rope so that you can attach them to the back of the car - that way they follow you and you don't have to stop [risking getting stuck again] to retrieve them until conditions allow.

i have a second set of wheels with winter tires on for this purpose, soon as the bad weather comes i swap them over till it gets better.

Purchased a set of winter tyres a few years back, best few hundred pounds i have spent, it kept the heavy snow away from hear for a few years.

More a Community service, then. Winter tyres improves things from around seven degrees down, no need for snow or ice.

You'd think that but some parts of Milton Keynes are complete dead zones.

I suspect it will be the same as much of Scotland beyond the central belt, no signal or it goes down in bad weather: when you may need it.

I've twice considered using my mobile to request help, both times I had no signal so had to rely entirely on my own means.

Just out of interest how long are mobile phone masts supposed to work for when the mains goes off ? Years ago when we had strong winds that brought a lot of trees and power lines down we lost the mobile network after only a couple of hours.

I consider a mobile as a useful thing to have but not to be relied upon when trouble strikes.

It did let me down when I went to buy the 110 from an auction place in lancashire, neither of us could work out how to pop the bonnet, so I pulled out my phone to Google it, no signal ... 'youre in the country now boy'
