Had to push the aa not to send a repair van. Trying to explain unless you have a new secondary ecu/uch and the ability to code it on site your wasting your time. Someone with a bit of sense played ball in the end.

Been there with the RAC, my LWB 2.8 Frontera lunched its transfer box by the Monmouth tunnels a few year back, transmission was jammed solid and no way to move it. Rang plod 1st as I was in the outside lane facing oncoming traffic about 50yds from the mouth of the tunels followed by RAC. Told RAC to not bother sending a van it needs a tow truck, usual reply from the call centre person but at least managed to express to them the unlikelyhood of the patrol guy repairing it. Luckily the patrol guy picked up on my description and rang me before coming over and just sent a breakdown truck

The driver explained why they do it. Get people trying to use them as a car delivery service for a newly purchased vehicle with no mot etc for free by saying its broken down.

Last month I was lucky. Close enough for the wife to pick me up while I attempted to jury rig the uch/bcm made sure I bought a full flask back and plugged in an audio book for the hours wait.

Normally just a phone and breakdown cover in normal conditions If I’m going silly places in nasty conditions I take the truck that’s full of clutter and sometimes chuck a bike in

Since I broke down in London and not being able to leave my motor(crap double cab amorok) I now take my bmx so at least I can go for a quick ride or annoy security guards

To be honest Iv driven off road since I was 12 and competed for years. If my motor isn’t capable then the south of this country is stuffed!

Watch yourself with the hatchet, you could be breaking the law carrying that. I know it’s there for good reason but one of my work colleagues was put in his local nick for 24 hours for a carrying a knife in his truck. It was his FC truck and the knife he used for gralloching. Plus he was on his way home from work!

So he had a legitimate reason for having it and they couldn't charge him for it - hence only 24 hours in the nick, they knew they couldn't make it stick but wanted to punish him for something so they held him as long as they could without charging him.

I hear stories like this and often think to myself "yeah right now what's the full story?"

The knife was "in his truck" - why were the Police looking in his truck?

Why were they even talking to him? They are a rare enough site that it's decades since I've even had "just a routine check sir"

My suspicion is (whether the people who have been in trouble or those that subsequently relate the stories will admit it or not) that the person with the knife has been doing something to attract the attention of the Police. When the Police have spoken to them they've turned into Billy big balls and given the Police some grief (they really love being told to go and catch a real criminal) at which point the Police have turned petty and a knife stops being a tool and turns into an offensive weapon. What would probably have started as a talking to and ended with "mind how you go" ends up with a night in the cells because the protagonist couldn't bite their tongue and let the tinpot dictator wannabe "win" a conversation.

As far as i’m aware he was in a line of traffic. He and several others got pulled. I can’t say how he reacted, I wasn’t there. The knife was on the passenger seat with the rest of his stalking gear, easily seen it was a tool of his trade. My take is it was an over zealous officer.

Either one could be at fault really or just a combination of both probably.

I've heard of a few similar cases involving the humble multi tool, something that a lot of people have in their glove box or carry on their belt, I've certainly used mine a lot over the years, having an half decent pair of pliers, screwdrivers etc can come in really useful,.....the 'problem' is that all the good ones contain a locking blade so they fall under the it's a 'lock knife/you need 'good reason' for having it at the very time of being stopped'.

Personally I think that these tools should be exempt from the law, no self respecting criminal would use one in the first place would they? Far too cumbersome and the blade isn't easily accessible in a lot of them. Lol

I have a few knifes and 2 axes in my truck all of the time and very often a chainsaw
And always have a locking pocket knife in my pocket, a non locking one is pretty useless in my veiw

the lexus has a pretty comprehensive toolkit as standard - torch, spanners, screwdrivers specifically to fit the usual suspects plus spare bulbs.

in addition I always carry:

hi vis waistcoat + steelies (in case I find myself near a scrapyard and fancy a walk round.)

big folding reflective triangle.

extending breaker bar.

trolley jack rather than use the scissor jack.

I've also got the 5t bottle jack from the shogun, but just for storage.

kneeling pads
tyre pump.
jump leads.
tyre fix aerosol.
length of rope. (for towing + otherwise)
10ah (allegedly) powerbank for phone.

socket set
drill/screwdriver set
set of chisels + mallet.
hammer
Japanese saw
cordless drill
ratchet straps
cable ties
lighter, solder, tin foil (emergency soldering kit)

paraffin stove, kettle, brew kit, couple of pot noodles - 1litre of paraffin + a pack of hexamine tablets.
water proofs.
hammock + tarp



in winter, I add:
jumper + over trousers. padded shirt.
arctic sleeping bag.
small mountaineering tent (phoenix phreak)
pieces of carpet.
6 bags of rocksalt (for weight mainly - rwd car)
folding shovel.

I also put a blanket + a couple of cushions on back seat.


some of these aren't neccessarily "for emergencies" - more lifestyle.
I visit mum, exmrsegg, daughter, son, gf regularly and often get roped in for odd jobs.
and sometimes, I'll just go for a drive, and decide to have an "overnighter" somewhere - perhaps to avoid getting up too early to drive to an auction, or carboot sale.

or sometimes to drive to Spurn Point and look at the milky way.
or up the A1 to look at mountains.

the boot in the lexus is *huge* btw, big enough to take two folding wheelchairs plus luggage.
