I have never had winter tyres on a car I own - I live in Norfolk - why would I?
But I am a car mechanic and have driven plenty of vehicles in the snow with winter tyres fitted and I can tell you - winter tyres really do work.
Even on a tiny little car front wheel drive car they are excellent - most 4x4 motors have some form of Mud and snows S+M on them.

i have a second set of wheels with winter tires on for this purpose, soon as the bad weather comes i swap them over till it gets better.
they do make a fair bit of difference in the wet as well as snow and ice
making sure you have a decent spare is a must, a lot of people neglect the wheel so its often flat or cracked making unsuitable for use when you most need it.
a decent breaker bar and correct size socket too for when you cant get the wheel nuts off with the piddly tool manufacturers normally give you

I've got a box full of stuff, self amalgamating tape, spare rad hoses, multimeter, rad cap, cable ties, wheel wrench, service manual, foot pump, chain, ratchet straps, bulbs, general tools etc. Never really needed any of it other than to fix a mate Alfa bonnet back down racing back late to the ferry from Le Mans......

In my van I keep a trolley jack, towing strap, jump leads and a 5 foot scaffold board.
My bike comes with a puncture kit and co2 cartridges as standard on top of that I keep leccy tape, stumpy spanners, small pliers and a tiny little jump start pack.

Hawkeye Diagnostic tool, multimeter, 2 socket sets:metric and a/f, same spanners, assorted tools: Allen keys, screwdrivers, jump leads. I have taken a prop shaft off to drive home in diff lock when a diff went.
Rescue tool: Glass hammer/seatbelt knife
Full size shovel
Military folding entrenching tool, a bushman saw ( have had to chop up fallen trees when road blocked)
Blanket, waterproofs, warm hat, head torch
Jackall Farm Jack
Assorted strops, shackles, snatch block etc for winch

I believe the police call that going equipped lol.
Has served to remind me to sort out a car kit. Don't think about it in the van as it's stocked for work anyway.

I have maps in the van. Be stranded if my satnav ever died.
Be amusing if I was stopped. Often have an Avon s10 gas mask in the boot as well.
The way most people's minds work these days they would think I was going to a kinky party!

My work truck broke down in the center of London just off oxford street and I waited two hours to be told it was another 5hours wait...
The AA sent a taxi for me and I was home by 9.30pm. I left the house at 5am that day. You can have all the tools you need when a front brake pad lets go and disintergrates no amount of swearing at the side of the road will help you get home. If it was rural roads I would have driven home with the hand brake and gearbox but the noise was amplified by the tall buildings

Having to drive the 62 across to Leeds, in the winter I have a dry bag with a tent, sleeping bag, stove, brew gear and some cup a soups in. Luckily not had need to use them but our neighbour got stuck on the tops last year in the snow for 18hrs.
In the Landy I carry a spare set of wheel bearings, socket set and spanner roll, screwdrivers, recovery gear, winching tackle, a hi lift jack, a shovel, a folding saw , breaker bar, a bottle jack, a good led searchlight, a small fireman’s Hatchet and some fluids

Watch yourself with the hatchet, you could be breaking the law carrying that. I know it’s there for good reason but one of my work colleagues was put in his local nick for 24 hours for a carrying a knife in his truck. It was his FC truck and the knife he used for gralloching. Plus he was on his way home from work!
