Extra items in your vehicle breakdown kit?

Following on from this thread really, got me thinking, what items (if any) have you chaps added to the tool kit of your vehicle?

If you run a fairly modern vehicle, what's the chances of you fixing it at the side of the road compared to vehicles of old? I'm thinking of all the sensors/electronics that modern vehicles have now.

I do still carry cable ties, wire and tape, all things that could lash a broken part together or hold back a leak from a radiator hose for example. I did have the leaf spring on a fairly new Transit van snap on me once, seeing those two mole grips used like that reminded me, thing is, even if I had had two of those with me at the time, they would have been no use because the leaf broke right at one end.

I used to carry all sorts, but now a 12v compressor and tools to change the wheel but beyond that just a breakdown cover card

a subscription to green flag. some jump leads and a towrope got a load of tools in the van for work or whatever

Price of having my van brought home on a lorry makes breakdown cover a no brainier.
Costs me £120 a year any vehicle me or the wife are in or anyone transporting my children about.

Cost me near 200 to have my van bought home off my own back.

I own a modern Land Rover, Range Rover and Electric BMW - naff all i'd be prepared to try and fix on them never mind at the side of the road other than changing wheels (and only if I deemed it safe) and replacing bulbs or fuses. I have added a better Jack to the Landrover as the OEM one is not fit for purpose, a wheel mounting helper as the RR and LR's wheels are heavy then bulbs, fuses,Hi Viz and flashing warning light. Most important is the Recovery contact details!

Just about everything in mine on a permanent basis ,certainly enough tools to strip down/repair any machine on site.

@8ob If you're in a crash or really sudden stop, some of that unsecured stuff in the rear might have your head off.

I think that tyre might be the wrong size for your van

Had a crash years ago in a J4 van ,the oxy/acetylene cylinders and most of my tools followed me out of the windscreen. I am mindful of this and dont drive fast but should really fit a bulkhead.

In the back of my estate car I have...

Jump leads (proper heavy duty set)
Tow strap with shackles
Foot pump and plugging tyre repair kit
Small tool bag with tools and fuses and bulbs
Small multimeter and basic faultcode reader.
5ltr fuel can of derv.
Swedish army alloy folding snow shovel
Ice scraper and deicer.
Head torch and spare batteries.
Fleece blanket - camping pillow - four season sleeping bag.
Wellies and thick socks
Old thick coat - waterproof trousers - bobble hat and gloves
Folding dog bowl and big bottle of water.
Petrol pressure stove - 1ltr of petrol - kettle - spoon and mug.
Tea bags - dried powdered milk - pot noodle - dried instant camping meals x3 - mars bars - toilet roll.

All cleverly packed-condensed into sturdy plastic crate - with bungee straps over the top to hold everything in place.

I once spent nearly 36hrs in a rear wheel drive BMW - pre mobile phone - stuck in a snow drift.
I will never ever venture out un prepared ever again - trust me on this.




It was my girlfriends car - I ended up rifling thru her sports bag in the boot looking for extra clothing towels - ripped the plastic engine top cover off with no tools and melted snow in an old stainless dogs bowl on the engine rocker cover to get some fluids into me - I had to dig the air intake and exhaust pipe out with a CD case - I reckon if was not for a full tank of fuel - I would have died. I was dressed for a night out - shirt jumper - slip on shoes - not a hike off an unfamiliar mountain with no map in a blizzard.

Wifey reckons this is why I have always bought estate cars - so I can get comfy sleeping in the snow with the seats folded down - bitch!

I had a large roll of 6.0mm cable sat on a pair of step ladders that were laid over the passenger seat . ran up the back of a stationary car. I was doing about 30mph when I hit it . the roll of cable flew forward and went through the windscreen and over the bonnet good job it wasn't behind me

Gone are the days when you need to bodge something


I still keep a toolbox, a trolly jack and stands in the back of the 110, but that's mainly so I don't have to carry them from the workshop when I'm working on it

Couple of strips of old carpet are very handy in the snow too.

Cars come with car mats for this purpose
