After eddie commented i watched a few vids. there meant to be loose so you bang the extending shaft down to hammer it in around the nail, then extend for leverage.

Update on the odds n sods I got.
From this.
The chuck was seized, the gear and handle was seized with old grease and could be removed.
The side handle was missing and the whole lot had a good covering of rust.
The Makers sticker was still viable.
Striped, after bathing in hot citric acid. The Main gear was just cleaned.
Yes, there are 2 chucks, yes I acquired another one. Yes, it does not fit any of the others I have. But it will yield spare springs.
Cleaned up, lacquered and greased. The ball bearings were replaced. The side handle was an old file handle with a cut down UNC bolt what was glued in.
It has a smooth action and the chuck will take a 9/16 or 14mm drill.
The 2 cranked handle adjustables, now work and have bean coached enamelled. I left the makers name etc, clear on the small one. The rectangle on the big one has the makers name and Patent Number on show.

Yeah, I'd guessed that - but it means when youre levering, all the force is on the edge of the rim of the outer pipe. Abushing would spread the force a bit.
Mine also has the jaws a bit chewed so they don't close flush.
.Not sure if I should fettle it with a file, or build it up with weld first - maybe with a bit of hardox

No pics but I have been looking for a dog guard for the D3 but no one wants to post them and they are all to far away.
One popped up eBay last week in Bristol for £30, it's now mine
But the best bit, got my Brother to collect as he works in Kingswood and the seller offered him a rear load cover for the D3 for free, thankfully he grabbed it and brought them both over today and yes I do need one of them as well

This cute guy has been successfully reunited with it's owner.
The printed out signs were seen by a friend of the lit girl and through a few phone calls we have returned him to her.

Well, not strickly today, but I have acquired a Belt sander, a Grimax 150S.
I entered a search on the Dutch Ebay, and got a mail that stated a belt sander was for sale near me.
Clicked on the add, and the guy wanted 200€ for it, with a non functioning 3 phase motor, the top lid ill fitting and with the front work rest missing.
I already had acquired a 3 phase motor quite some time ago as I had plans to build myself a sander, and after confirming the motor speed and power were the same (rpm is, my motor is a bit more powerfull) I decided to collect the machien asap.
I have made a sleeve bushing as the original motor had a 4mm thicker axle on it then te one I had, and after loctiting it in place and fabricating a key to keep the wheel from rotating I now have a fully fuctioning machine with a dust extraction base. When looking for the graphite wear surface that's fitted to the top (to keep the belt from wearing down the top platten) I found out this machine sells for 2700€ ex vat, so with me in it for 300 quid (machine, graphite wear plate and some new dust hoses), and some paint I'm well chuffed.

These were dropped off by a nice guy, we are changing a herald gearbox for him between other jobs as the 1st gear had more missing teeth than a bare knuckle boxer.
