Have got it all back in the way i think it should be. 3 breakers for lights/pump/dro. 12v power supply for led lights and speed sensor. Will need to buy some glands n crimps to finish it off.

Id rather that lot than a vfd personally as i know i can fix that but hey ho thats just personal prefference.

With regard to having the old school set up vs the Vfd, if you haven't got 3 phase power in your shop then it's all redundant anyway, unless you are using a rotary converter.

I can understand the point of it being easier to see how it works, but you still have to repair it by replacement.

Anyone throw a guess at what size capacitor i'll need to make this 3 phase sump pump motor into a single phase. Its 440v 0.1kw , going to 240v single phase with capacitor . no real load so might just work

Or could I just parrallel it to the main motor running the VFD, got a feeling its a dumb idea but you never know

It's 8 micro Farads Paul. I'll give the workings shortly. Got to get the little 'un from nursery.

So you'll have to rewire the motor to star. Edit.. . I mean delta. What a chimp. The current at 240 volt is 1.73 x the 415 volt current (ie 1/root3), which gives about 0.6 amps.

To calculate the capacitor:-

Amps/(2pi x freq x volts)

So

0.6/(2 x 3.14 x 50 x 240)

Gives

7.96 micro Farads

Or 8 micro Farads for cash.

Make the cap at least 270 ish volts working voltage.

Don't run it off the vfd. One singer one song.

The motor should be wired in Delta. That is, assuming it is Star at present. If it's 440v Delta then you're scuppered (or put up with a slow pump).

Of course I meant 1.73 is root3, not the reciprocal of root3.

I would leave the pump in star and use a capacitor.

cheers folks , have bought a 8 uf cap to see if it works . unfortunately is permanently wired 440v no star delta options ....so hopefully it has enough oomph to work

Leaving it in star means you're going to have about 120 volts across each coil instead of 240.

If your wheel bearings on the spindle dont work out, and your budget allows, it might be worth checking out Gamet or equivalent bearings. From Simply Bearings new Gamet's for my M350 are less than £1k all in.

Quite possibly, I checked for M300 bearings too and they are even less!! Yes I did double check.

I run my suds pump with a 2.5 uf cap, it gives the best balance on voltages

I had a price from 600 Group, even cheaper than Simply Bearings by over £50!!!

Well capacitor took a while to get here but it works , takes a reasonable grip of my fingers to stop the shaft so it should pump OK.

voltage over the capacitor is 170 v , supply 240v and final phase 380v . Not sure if i need to go up or down in value to get it better ballanced , or if its even worth changing.
