I used to visit a firm who made a certain article (I shouldnt name it)....they were struggling to keep up with orders and needed say 40 a week. They had never made 40 a week so they asked the workforce..."how can we make 40 a week"......the reply was to pay a bonus for every one over their previous record (whatever that was)....the management agreed and and quite soon they were making 40 a week even if the workforce had to work overtime (unpaid)....pretty soon it was evident that 40 a week was becoming easier so they also agreed that the workfoce could finish for the week once they had done 40......some weeks they were doing this in 3 days and always in 4 days.............So the firm got their numbers, the workforce got paid more and everyone had more time off......Thiis is a true story but unfortunately the firm still closed but it was for reasons beyond their control.

Unfortunetly its getting to be a cutural thing. Under 30's see work as the something to avoid.

How does that figure out? The 40% is only taxable for the amount that you earn over the threshold, not on everything you've earned because you went over it.
Thats a bit youngest is it not?
How does inheritance work. I know at least one form of tax you do not pay any if you are under....i think its IT and 33k but go one penny over and you pay 40% on the lot.
What is it they do while there??

Income tax doesn't work like that. You pay 20% tax from your PA up to the £31580 threshold and the increased tax only for earnings over that. All it means is you pay double-tax after £31580 up to £150k

A firm I used to do work for produced precision ground silver steel. They bought a load of redundant stock off a firm that went bust so they had a production holiday, everyone got a week off on full pay. Except the bosses and me because we still had to get the orders out.

Nah it was different here back in the 80's, it went on a lot, people refusing to work above a certain amount of hours or they got whacked with tax. Then i think the EU ordered a change of rules, tax laws etc.
I like to think I have a fairly decent work ethic and could probably count on one hand the amount of shifts i have missed my whole working life... Apart from one firm where you'd be lucky if a did a full week in the 3 months i was there! It certainly wasn't because i was lazy! Theres must be a reason you also cant find new staff? Do you think they are lucky to have a job or do you feel grateful they turned in for the other 4?

Not necessarily. I've seen that behaviour, and it's highly irksome when you have to deal with it. Seems to be a trait more notable in 80's children onwards. Lasses actually seem to have more go in them than the lads, who tend to be a pain in the ****. They seem to want it all without any of the effort. There are obviously good & bad examples though.

One place I worked at one manager always recruited the best staff, he never read any CVs, invited them in, showed them the worst job on site and asked if they could do that for 8 hours away the ones who said yes he gave the job to.
Its very difficult to get people now I feel too many are rejected as they dont have this or that on a CV, I also feel the older folk and young mums are a very good un used source of labour often over looked.
On the other hand some people are born gobshites and you will never change them so you have to get rid not nice but its them or you.

This is one thing that always amazes me, if you want to know about a task ask the workers but many people never do, its about getting them working smarter not harder, those little extras, I once had a lad who was having a bit of domestic trouble, one of the other lads tipped me off, I was blunt and asked him, I told him to go home and sort it out and I would pay him, we struggled that shift but he came back and worked so much better as he then knew I was bothered about him and his family.
It costs nothing to be nice and on the scale of things very little to give some one a few quid or time of when appropriate
