Why are gas cylinders a popular choice for making barbecues, rocket stoves, etc?

Is it because of their shape which is somewhat similar to a stove, the quality of steel used in their construction or perhaps a combination of both? Any other reasons for using them?

Totally agree with the "free" post, plus their shape lends it self to many different designs, some times with very little work,

If someone is after a couple of 19kg bottles I have two spare obviously they were de commissioned because they had a hole in them.

well the gas companys aren't making any effort to get them back so its tough luck .what can they expect . we are doing the nation a favour by recycling them

Yes when I left the UK I took the two large propane cylinders and a butane cylinders to the local gas supply company in Lancaster to claim my deposit back ... And they said "you have to claim the deposit back from the company you first got the gas from"! that was 30 years ago and in Dundee ....so I gave them to a mate who makes stoves and BBQs...

Depends on the company, several have gone bust in the past few years, its only really calor now that produces gas in bottles (I know there are a few smaller companies like Flo-gas), and to be honest Im paying a deposit / ownership charge when I get the bottle so if i never return it and get my deposit back do they lose out?

But some one must of payed a deposit on them at some point so technically not quite stolen and others may of found there way out after been condemed not fit for use

Not if you drop the company an email saying you are in possession of a quantity of their bottles and that they have X days to collect them or you will be disposing of them as you see fit, funny how they dont respond

There is no time scale but must be returned to the same agent that it was taken from in the first place and you must take the paperwork that you were given at the start I have quite a few with the caravan and space heater in the workshop
