Meddings A10 radial arm drill restoration

Old decals tend to decay over time. Hot water/steam usually just shrivels them and then they fall off, or shatter into a million pieces. That design wouldn't be too hard to make on MS Word or Paint, sheet of transfer paper and you'd be away.

Interesting on that last pic, there's a sheet metal shroud around the entire motor drilled into the casting.

I hadn't noticed the shroud before. I wonder if that was standard a option, it looks like it bolts to the back of the head casting and there are no signs of holes there on the three castings I have.

Good call on creating a new label this took me a couple of mins, probably needs aspect ratio and font tweaking when I get to measure it up in the flesh but takes seconds.

I like that It's a shame to lose little things when restoring machines.

Maybe it was optional for dusty environments that would fry or clog the motor - just speculation. You could test with a sheet of paper to see how it looks if you're thinking of doing it.

Do all the meddings drills you are working on have the back gear? I spotted a meddings drill for sale that needs a carrier sleeve (the short shaft the front pulley runs on) & the quill assembly but it is a normal 5 speed model. Thought perhaps you might be breaking one of the drills when you are finished.

Of the 4 meddings I have, 3 of them are the Pacera M4 variety and all have back gears. The plan is to make two good ones and sell any spares that i don't want to keep. I don't know what condition the gears are yet. Especially the sacrificial delrin gears, so probably too early to speculate whether there will be a gearbox spare and it's condition. It may be a while before the second one emerges from the rust but I will give the opportunity to members before going anywhere near the bay of thieves

That's come up lovely, a bit better than the last meddings drill I bought for spares

I painted up the top end of the drill over the weekend, lots of little fiddly bits, I shall assemble it next weekend before tackling the table and base. I also ordered some new silicon rubber flex, the old stuff was cracking badly.

Progress over the weekend - big top arm on the drill filled, sanded and masked over the weekend and sprayed at lunch when the temperature soared above 5c momentarily. I wanted to do this as once the head is on I don't want to take it off again to spray then arm. The table comes off with 4 bolts so I can lift that off with the engine hoist to do the table arm and base later.

All the head ancillaries were rubbed down, filled and painted over the weekend. Motor, star wheel, gear lever mechanism and other odds a sods.

Motor bracket and belt cover. We don't get newspapers so I rely on the neighbours when I need papers for masking, and they don't have read some crap!

And hanging from the CH pipes, the quill bottom bracket and the locking knob for the top arm. Next weekend the old utility room gets completely gutted, then the CH and water pipes are rationalised so I wanted to take advantage of the warm spraying environment one last time.

You ought change "while" to "whilst" too, IMO. Probably move "in" to the second line too, so that there isn't as much white space on that line.

Idk about that, it looks like it's laid out exactly as the original.

Back when I was at school we used to take a train to get there; that newspaper was a prize find! (though haven't they stopped p3 now?)

I did copy the original wording and spacing, it is a bit weird so do I change it or not I think I may leave as is given I have already printed one off, only on 80g standard inkjet paper though, I was thinking of maybe a bit of photo paper would be better.

Edit:

To make sure the resonance of the decal is full, it can often be beneficial to make a white 'shadow' of the decal - in this case a rectangle. That way the decal won't fade into the colour of the paint. I've tried using inkjet paper and spray adhesive on tools when I made my own label, it worked for a brief period but after a few months peeled off.

The waterslide stuff is good. An old acquaintance of mine uses that for replacement decals on his stationary engines, and it holds up well. I think that's what he used on my Amanco decals too.

I managed to get a bit more done, but reassembly is taking longer than I thought. I hate roll pins. The casting has altered very slightly between the original casting, and the donor head that I am stealing the good innards from. Three things are holding me back. The hole for the roll pin on the star wheel don't line up, Having a quick measure the casting is a gnats wider on the original and the spindle meaning the hole is about 3mm off. Did I mention I hate roll pins? Secondly the gear lever holder design is different so I have had to make a few modifications which I'm early through. The new design utilises a roll pin, sodding things!

And finally when I bolted the gearbox in, the quill was a tight as a tight thing and the return spring was nowhere near strong enough to return it. However, after a bit of head scratching, a brew, a bit more head scratching it turns out that if I just back off the five fixing bolts a turn then everything is good so it looks like another slight difference in casting which is just clamping the quill. So I'll stick a washer under the gearbox to raise it a gnats and hopefully it will all be good.

Here's a pic of progress so far. The star wheel is just placed on while I decide whether to drill a hole for the roll pin, yes I hate them, or to deploy a different fixing method. Probably the latter. I've found a few odd blemishes on the paint job, but not bad enough for me to sand back and start again. Probably as I was working in bad light and with loads of other stuff to do I rushed it a little. I've got to collect a couple of trees my neighbour has given to me after having them felled, which means putting the trailer back together. Also we are out of kindling and I need to make room in the barn for the plint for the new boiler. So today tinkering time may be over unless I can sneak out later.

I did manage to sneak out for an hour and got it all sorted, just waiting for power now which should come next week when I extend the 3 phase over to the other side of the workshop.

The star wheel just needed showing the hide hammer with a bit more determination, I was scared of damaging the paint before, I covered it with an old leather glove and gave it a clout. The gear lever aligned nicely after a bit of filing so both star wheel and gear lever pins went in OK. The washers under the gearbox did their job so the quill goes up under the spring nicely and the gears change smoothly. Before the donor drill fell off the bench and smashed the casting, it must have be well looked after as everything is tight as a drum.
