Tools from the Bootsales??

yup love a good booty, but around this neck of the woods there is a handfull of dealers always there from 6 am onwards , so hard to get anything good, they tend to hover on the new incoming cars and virtually help them unload......so not much gets by them.

Yeah....more than once someone has been close to having to visit the dentist as they have started trying to unload my truck.

I refuse to sell there anymore....

Autojumbles are good for tools. Take a four wheeled garden trolley and packed lunch like the seasoned pro`s do, I wondered what it was all about until I stood in a queue for an hour just for cup of tea and dogmeat burger, also ended up dumping bags of gear at stalls and having to go back for them, ended up with arms longer than an orangutan.

Coincidentally I saw a chap towing a cart last weekend and been debating the same.

@slim_boy_fat didn't really have a use for the slides at the time. Was only looking at them for the handles. Hindsights a wonderful thing. Can think of multiple uses now.

Haven't done a bootsale for a longtime. Last time , I had a load of fishing gear that I no longer used (amazing how these collections mount up).
Had everything marked up with a price sticker, yet nearly everytime someone picked something up they would say "how much mate". Must just be a habit I guess .

Had a broken ABU reel , wanted £2 for it. It's ticketed up with "spares or repair £2" Matey picks it up, asks if there is anything wrong with it, I say yes, it's broken , that's why it's £2 (£50 brand new).
He rolls his eyes, and walks off muttering I'm not paying £2 for a broken reel

I quite often see better stuff when I'm throwing rubbish away at the tip.

Sign of the 'throw-away' society we've allowed ourselves to become in '1st world' countries. Quite different in large parts of the world.

Yep, our local tip does not have a recycle facility either. The one in the next town does, but that's under a different council and they use number plate recognition to make sure you don't use their facilities.... their loss I guess.

Went to a an autojumble once and on the first table I get too are a pair of what I thought were new motorcycle forks, they were fully adjustable with not a mark on them. Thinking they would be £300 or more, how much mate? Oh £35! I nearly pulled me trousers down getting the money out of my pocket so fast!
I still knocked him down a tenner though.... force of habbit I suppose.
Turns out they are from a Honda CBR 600 F4 fully adjustable Showa forks.
They are now holding up the front end of my cafe racer project.

Their definition of 'recycling' = selling on the stuff to commercial enterprises which will deal with it in their turn, not allowing folk like us to bring it back to life, either for it's intended/designed purpose or as part of another 'thing'.

I infrequently visit these sales but have bought some useful tools for pennies , ie vintage forged garden fork a quid , micro adjustable 8 inch compass,dividers 50 p, 100 watt monster soldering iron again a quid, aluminium 2 ton bottle Jack a quid , Bentley ,tecalamit grease gun wiyh 3 knuckle joints a quid, a large box of woodwork tools inc unused Ward chisels combination plane 3 large wooden planes virtually as new blades , one is 2.5 in wide plus oads more for 20 quid, indeed I can count on two hands the no of woodwork tools I have bought new, and I have fully equipped shop, the good stuff is out there, you just have to be lucky or persistent,

Oh, this one actually sells it back to the public. They have a big shed and an outdoor area . I've seen full sets of golf clubs, benches, kids swings, bikes etc.
If I have stuff like that I tend to stick it on the local Facebook selling sites for next to nothing, just to save a trip .
When the 8 year old Panasonic Plasma went pop, I got £25 for it off some guy on Facebook . The wife was convinced I wouldn't get anything for it lol

at the local hall auction are a couple guys who buy from the local tips take it to auction and make a fair bit out of it , strangley car booters buy a lot of it and re sell again...so from a skip and resold time after time...

Came across a woman selling an obviously used back silencer box, labelled as off a 1.0 Ford Fiesta EcoBoost, both the inlet and outlet pipes had been cut off and she wanted £50 for it. (A new one is about £22 inc VAT and the whole system is about £80).
What a world we live in eh?

bought a zeus chart book for a quid otherwise there was nothing worth buying most folk must be on holiday or going to steam fairs and car shows along with sellers . it may pick up shortly I hope

Went to weekly big one today, weather was a bit on and off and quite a few had packed up already. It was either that or local auction centre that does a whole range of stuff every 3rd Saturday of every month, sales are divided by catagory and I've had some good stuff from the 'Garage and Workshop' section.

Regarding the 'tip treasures' thing, well York is incredibley annoying in that respect. Because York is run 'For the tourist, by the idiot' the people who live here regularly get the short straw in regards to the way things are run/managed and the council tip is no exception.
You can't buy things from there, you can't take things either so gaining to reuse in an actual recycling fashion is pointless. There's many rules about what you can and can't do, and with what vehicle you come with, sometimes it feels like they're purposely trying to prevent you from using the facilities.
You can't come in with a van, stickered up or not. Doesn't matter if it's stuff from your own house or whatever.
You can have a trailer but you can only use it 10 times a year (gets stamped at the gate)
The most confusing one is what happened to us. Now my girlfriend has a pickup truck, and we needed to get rid of our old tumble drier. It would fit very easily in my estate car but my dad wanted to borrow a friends cement mixer and neither me nor him wanted that in our cars, so logically, use the truck, thats what it's for.
So drier goes in and we go off to the tip, get to the gate and we are met with;
"Have you got your permit?"
"What for?"
"Opened backed commercial vehicle"
"It's not commercial, it's a private vehicle"
"Any vehicle with an open back needs a permit, I'll let you in this once but you'll have to get a permit"
"How much does that cost?"
"It's free"
"So what's the point of that then?"
"It's all in this leaflet here, it you put a canopy on you don't need a permit"
"But it's the same vehicle"
"I don't make the rules"

So yeah, we chucked the drier in the scrap container as loudly as we could and went.

Don't you need a WTL to use commercial tips these days. Weighing up the pros and cons of a licence ATM. Usually rely on skips for simplicity's sake.

Warwickshire have a skip you can throw asbestos into loose. You can take it to the tip in a car or mobile home, but not a trailer or pick up. You cant take anything in a van. Anyway, once every five or six boot sales I find a handy tool of some sort, If I dont I rake through the boxes of spanners till I find a good one to make it worth going.

Down here in Essex they are tightening up too. I cannot go to the local tip, abot 2 miles, as it is under a different council. I have to go 8 miles the other way.
Also, I cannot go in my T5 kombi van as it has panelled rear sides (but rear seats and side windows) as it is classed as commercial. If it had glass all the way down it would be ok. I tried to point out that it is a private vehicle and the back is full of dog cages so cannot be commercial, but no go. I was told I would have to go about 20 miles to another council tip where there is no restrictions!

Vans on a Thursday down here, but I don't seem to have any problems getting in on another day in my T5 Kombi. Does help knowing the regional manager though and supplying the access stair frames to them
