Ignore the dead centre being used as a live center lol

I know it's barbaric but I have about 5 of them and didn't have a live center to use

Using a greased dead centre is fine up to about 250 rpm. When turning between centres a dead centre is often used in the tailstock

Hi, I am just doing some work on a similar vintage M300 S#141428. Did your Compound Slide originally have 2 Needle roller bearings or have you machined the Boss to accept the one nearest the Handle? Mine currently only has one set.
Also my Apron has the Old style Felt wipers what have you used?

My compound has 2 thrust bearings as in the photos

And as for wipers I have old rubber and felt but then bough some off eBay made from a plastic type material but they do no fitthe early Harrison M300 so be warned! Mine are fitted but not very well as the holes had to be bodged and elongated to fit but it's made them loose etc and the bottom pieces broke off of a couple of them

I am on the look out for replacement originals if they ever crop up and the 600 group do not supply them either anymore

Dressed back the weld for the fixed steady rest

Has all been wire brushed back to bare metal now as well so will primer and paint when I get a chance

Are the ebay wipers 3D printed in ABS Plastic? I could do that myself if they are.

For the machined surfaces and bare surfaces that had surface rust I used wire wool, vinegar, oil and some soft wire wheels on the grinder

I use those track cleaning blocks for model railways for cleaning machined surfaces, they don't remove material and work dry, and they leave a great finish too

Hi yes they are abs plastic but not sure if they are 3D printed or not, they seem ok if the holes were in the right place etc

For filler wire I just used some 309L I had, not ideal for cast from what I have read but for a non critical job like this I thought I'd give it a go and see if it cracks or not

just picked up a m300 last week and have strip it down to clean and repaint.

I've found the supplier you used for the paint but can you tell me quantities I will need of primer, beige and olive drab?

Less than you think. A litre should do you just fine with some to spare.

I'd slap it on thick if it were me. On some of the machines i have seen over the years, the paint is extremely thin, and its a pain to strip a machine down to repaint it if it starts rusting.

Good tip and something I have been considering myself. Didn't want to ask though at risk of being flamed by the 'machines should be grey/working/chip-covered/swarf-everywhere/oil-stained' mob!

When I did the ML7 I ordered 2 x 500ml tins of the Myford grey [yes.....], I still have one unopened and a very little in the other, if that gives you any guide as to quantity? Will probably bin the 'nearly-empty' one, as I expect it'll solidify before I need any again.

Yep, a litre of primer and a litre of topcoat are more than enough as you say. I've got oodles of blue left over from the grinder so I may use some of this for the lathe base and find another colour for up top.
