I think we're better informed now.I don't think hydration is what it used be. Years ago you never seen anyone walking around with a bottle of water, bottle of wine, bottle of broon ale aye, but noo wtf.
That's always made me smile when they put "filtered through million year old rock" followed by a "best before" date

As for having to carry a bottle at all times to keep hydrated. Bit like needing the current handbag.
Wallace, the best water where I used to live was out of granite hills. Not unknown for radio active deposits.
Oh, and when doing a bit of white water canoeing on the Spey back in the late 60s, one of our group announced that it was OK to drink water from a stream, even if there was a dead sheep 100yds up, as the water would 'purify' it self. I told him to try that and get back and tell us, if he survived.
So did he survive?
So did he survive?
I grew up with lead pipes and I'm sure there weren't any residual effects, apart from the slight twitch and the nightmares, but that's nothing.I have a lead infeed and it's not killed me in 25 years.

So, plastic bottles.
Someone must be able to provide a real answer - from random (and not very enthusiastic) looking around over the years the closest thing to a reason I have found is that they'd prefer you to buy another bottle rather than refill with cheaper water.
