your rules for tool lending

Mine are as follows
1) Only to those i really trust and have knowen for donkeys

2) You break it or lose a part or bit you replace it

3) while you have my tool you do not sub let it to some other moron who i've never spoken or see in my life,as happened yesterday when i was passing a job where a very good pal of mine who borrowed my 9'' grinder with a 1 month old diamond cutting disk to find that this nobhead after cutting a slab was useing it like a hammer to also chip bits off one was not a happy chappy.

Everybody i know either has their own tools, or is useless so any request for borrowing tools usually means 'can you come as well'.

Sadly I'm a miser, I never lend tools, for whatever reason.....

If you need it, buy it, if you need it that much to ask you'll need it again, get your own and cherish it, like I cherish mine...

I HAD a few basic rules
Never lend anything electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, or engine powered. Asking for a few quid (in reality, almost the same as its replacement cost) as a deposit usually does the job of frightening them off.
If anything is lent, and it’s retuned late, or dirty, or with any form of damage on it, you never borrow anything again.
Nothing is ever lent to anyone who I think will lend it to someone else.
I really do hate it, when people say “but I can’t afford all the tools you have,” maybe if you hadn’t gone on holiday to Mauritius, you would be able to.
Like others have said, you ask for the tool, you get the operator (me) as well.
I think Reaper has it best “you need it, you buy it - I had to” – that’s my mantra from now on.

The answer is no. Sometimes my wife promises my assistance in advance cornering me, at which point I end up having to go with it mostly.

Also someone should never need my stuff more than once, or they had enough use for it to buy their bloody own so they better stop trying to have a free ride off my hard work paying for stuff.

If in the rare rare case I borrow someone something, if I have to chase up its return, that person has made my do not borrow list for life.

Ive found that over the years Ive developed a reputation for being a grumpy old curmudgeon in relation to this and also in doing stuff for other people full stop. Mostly amongst people who are trying to freeload from me. Its a reputation I have carefully nurtured over the years. I imagine there are quite a few "miserable sods" out there who have got sick of being the one expected to rebuild or re-manufacture everything for others to save themselves a tenner so they can go spend it down the pub on beer instead

I really don't like lending out, or borrowing tools. It often causes issues for one side or the other.

Currently I've been doing a lot of work with someone else, for the first time I've got a fair bit of my kit at his workshop, but then I'm there almost daily. We'll see how it goes...

Generally my tools are not allowed to leave my sight. The only exception being when I cant remember where I last left the ******s.

If a tool must be borrowed I generally steer the conversation onto how I will do the work but only if supplied with coffee/beer/food/snacks/smoke, seems fair to me.

Last chap I lent all my car wiring tools to ended up having a kitchen refurb in which all my tools dissapeared.. yet another fistful of cash never to be seen again.

I have a chepo tool kit I lend out and keep all the good stuff for me only. Though I did go mad at one lad who was at my unit using my tool and stated to use a hammer on my ratchet! try a breaker bar!

I agree with Luke, I don't really like borrowing or lending tools.

The rules I would like to apply are:

Return promptly after you've finished
Clean before return or at least a wipe down
Don't borrow if you think you might break it
If you break it you replace it

We've got some builders in at the moment and the wife lent them my ladders. They seemed a little surprised when she told them I'd want them back clean. So far they've not managed to get them too dirty. I'll give them a clean before returning them to the shed

We've put up a dry wipe board by the door to the maint dept at work and any one who borrows tools etc. gets name/date written on it, they don't like it but it has increased amount of stuff returned instead of left where they used it.

Nothing annoys me more than getting to a job and finding a particular tool I want has been "borrowed" from my toolbox

Up until about 2 years ago I would reluctantly loan out tools to trusted friends only with the usual caveats. However one such 'trusted' friend borrowed my Klann ball joint splitter and returned with the comment that the pivot pin was broken when he tried to use it !! Thats funny I said, because when I used it last it was fine and your the only person to have touched since then ! Wasn't me he repeated ! He subsequently discovered my dark side when he asked to borrow another tool a few months later when he was really up against it to complete a job, yeah, no prob I said, the deposit will be equal to the price of the tool, we haven't spoken since !

My policy is now 100%, pi55 off and buy your own, to ANYONE !
