... so all the handle ends were sliced up from smashing against the edges of the metal sheets. Fortunately they were only a few quid, so not the end of the world.

That reminds me of the time i lent my Snapon ratchet screwdriver to someone, at work. He used it, put it back in the case, put away in the right drawer....No problems...
Then I went to use it, he'd put a pair of visegrips on the plastic handle to get more torque on it. A nicely chewed handle.
Drughead idiot. How on earth he thought that was a good idea is beyond me.

I lent a 'mate' a Honda engined cement mixer about five years ago. Haven't seen either of them since.

The only person that borrows my tools is my brother. My sons tend to use without permission but they dont leave the house or the garden or where ever they decide to leave them when finished with them...

I notice that my loss of tools seems to be in some sort of proportion to my youngest son's accumulation of similar items.

The only person that can use my tools if my GF's dad, cant really stop him as they are in his garage.

I`ve always tried to help people, but in later life have become more circumspect in lending tools; having had many simply 'disappear' or been returned broken (without even an apology).....but the most infamous scenario was when a neighbour, very belatedly returned a borrowed mag-drill (which looked for all the world like it had been thrown from the cliffs at Beachy-Head whilst out on 'loan') and complained bitterly, because he had lent it to a third party and it had "stopped working" and the said third party, was being inconvenienced "big-time" and wanted me to let him know as soon as I`d had it repaired, so he could finish the job!

.....and by the way: "no, I didn`t!"

I try not to, most of the friends I have either have their own stuff or know better than to ask.

As for borrowing stuff, Yes I do, and have a habit of repairing it if it's broken, or giving it back in a better state

I just got a pipe bender back from a "mate" who borrowed it 5 years ago, and even then it had to be collected.
another mate borrowed my market stall as I didnt use it, I borrowed his car roller, after a while we decided to swap,

last year he borrowed back the roller, to lend to a mate,
that reminds me my engine crane is missing.
