500ma is the input current. Looks like it puts out a variable voltage up to 12v at 5A continuous. ATX power supply has a 12v out rail which will do 10A so I'll plug it into the RCD socket and see if it goes bang I have a few of them from old desktops from work (good for bench power supplies).

Does it matter which is +ve or -ve?

LOL serves me right for not looking more closely. I wondered how on earth it would have been bubbling!

The +/- is critical yes because the process uses a sacrificial anode so unless you want to sacrifice your workpiece to the gods of electrolysis, best connect it to the negative.

I’m not hugely fussed about a car bodywork like finish so not going to be filling and priming then sanding again etc

Is there a brush on epoxy then?

Steve Lang used a roller on whole cars and got a good finish. He used Lechler epoxy.

Wanted to submerge the complete table in vinegar for a week or a few weeks to clean it up as best I can, I know it’s never going to be great anyway and has it’s fair share of war wounds but I like to try

So drew and cut and folded a bath for it from 3mm mild steel using the cnc plasma and cnc brake press at work,

Also drew and cut some handle for each end of the table on the cnc plasma and the slotted and welded some tube on them for a nice comfortable grip to make life easier lifting it

20 litres of white vinegar later and the table is completely submerged and every few days I can scrub it and brush it to see how it’s working

How it was and how it is so far before I put it in the vinegar bath tonight

Excellent work. I prefer citric acid over vinegar firstly because it doesn't stink (!), secondly it works really well and is cheaper than a bucket of ketchup but finally because you can use it to make sherbet!

I use citric acid in the ultrasonic cleaner, works a treat. Constantly amazed on what it will clean.

Vinegar absolutely reeks! Find someone with a working nose to test it for you. It's possible the extreme cold has lessened the extreme stink I suppose.

Citric acid and acetic acid (vinegar) will have very similar effects on metals. Can't remember the precise difference if any this makes to our use of it for rust removal. I think I settled on citric after looking it up tho.

A 10kg tub of citric is a tenner delivered. You could easily make 100 litres of "dip" with it, probably more depending on requirements...

Is it as simple as mixing the citric with water and then leaving the rusty parts to soak until the rust has gone? Sounds cheap and easy.

Yep. I generally use half a cup in a bucket for a weakish mixture but as with many of these processes, time makes up for concentrations. Keep it in a dark place and it will last for ages. I use it for flash rush or light surface rust (like the table above), not for the thick crusty stuff but that's only because I might prefer a quicker method. It doesn't get into an interference fit or into stuck threads like electrolysis can, I think it needs a certain volume of solution to be able to circulate.

The trick with sherbet is to use proper fondant icing sugar and the big mistake is leaving your citric grains too coarse.

I suspect the problem is it's too cold. Would make a huge difference if you could heat it even slightly.

Clean enough for me too, what's the other side like?

Give it a a rinse off with slight bi-carb solution and oil quickly before it gets a rust layer

I should explain I am replying to the idea of having to leave it in there for a week to finish it off when I suggested the cold may be the culprit. Clearly M K is doing a brilliant job and the table does indeed look amazing. It wasn't meant as a criticism.
